Frequent Panic NVRM[0/1:0:0]: Read Error 0x00000100

I've sent my MBP i7 mid-2010 for repair with the following frequent and intermittent kernel panic to no avail: panic(cpu 2 caller 0x9cdc8f): NVRM[0/1:0:0]: Read Error 0x00000100: ... to no avail.

I happen to have subscribed to AppleCare for this machine but this did not make any difference. The approved repair center I dealt with just reformatted the HD per Apple's support instructions (twice !) and were unable to reproduce the panic. I called the Apple support folks in Ireland directly with the incident # and got told that there was basically nothing wrong with my machine and that this was bound to be caused by non-Apple software (mind you, the support guy I talked to didn't even know that XCode was an Apple product - sic). I however believe this is very likely due to a faulty NVidia video card on the logic board.

Has this happened to someone else? How did you get resolution? Right now I am stuck with an unreliable machine and seem unable to get it fixed. Any help would be VERY appreciated.

Thank you,

François

There are a finite number of spares. At some point, the drive may indeed run out. If this occurs, the message back from erase disk will be "Initialization Failed!"

Also, if more than 10 blocks are substituted in one pass, you may get "Initialization failed!" Whether you decide to run another pass is a delicate judgement call.

Google has found (over an enormous sample of their drives) that most drives that develop more than one Bad Block that is spared out but the drive is left in service will be determined to be "BAD" (Bad enough to warrant replacement) within six months.

This brings up the possibility that a drive running out of spares is becoming inherently unreliable, and should either be moved to light duty service (second backup drive) or retired to a long life of propping open doors.

Thought I give an update on this from my experience

After visiting the Apple Store twice with no solution and panics pretty much every day, I went for a third time, prepared with all the printouts (again) and got the logicboard issue diagnosed within 5 minutes (first running the Apple System Test then the Apple Video Test). Big red "FAILED" with "replace MLB". They ordered a replacement and got it fixed and no panics so far...

I talked to the store manager about the whole experience and he pretty much said that the Geniuses have their protocol (and standard test suite) that they have to follow. Even if I bring them printouts and pointers to support and repair articles they tend to ignore me, since they don't trust any of the information out there (not quite his words, but that's how it came across). With my 3rd appointment, the first genius that looked at it pretty much ignored me too and started the default suite of tests - luckily another genius was standing next to him and said "those are the 2010 MBP - you have to run the VST on it", which the 2nd guy did when the 1st one stepped out. So the only conclusion that I took away was - let them run their system tests and diagnostics suite and talk to you about reinstalling MacOS and blame it on your software. At the end, show printouts of the KB article and reference the OP procedure that was mentioned and ask them to run AST and then VST. This produced the error message. For this error it's a rather fast test (5min), so checking the computer in to run tests in the back won't help (at least in my case, since they didn't run the appropriate tests anyway, despite claiming they did). If that doesn't get anywhere, finish up with the genius and talk to the manager about it. For me 3/4 didn't know anything about this issue, wouldn't run the required tests and wouldn't be convinced to do otherwise by me - only another genius that knew about it was able to get it solved.

Mar 15, 2013 7:39 AM in response to francois-vda

I've been having this issue for a couple of months now, with my MBP spontaneously going into panic and rebooting sometimes multiple times a day. Took it to the Apple store where it was diagnosed with a bad video card, however, in my case this repair was going to cost me $900 due to the fact that I'd replaced the HDD on my own earlier. So I decided to live with it.

At any rate, I just installed gfxCardStatus, and set it up to force everything to use the integrated GPU only. So far, this is working GREAT. In the past, working with iPhoto for more than about 5 minutes would almost always cause a panic, but that seems to have ben cleaned up. Fantastic!

I'm not sure with the limitations are of using integrated GPU only, but so far, I'm certainly happy to live with them!

I would be intersting to know if there is a lower level way to shut down the NVidia GPU, perhaps through BIOS switch, but in the meantime, gfxCardStatus seems to be working.

Mar 15, 2013 8:21 AM in response to i_am_Halloran

Hi Halloran,

you should call AppleCare and talk about the reason why in the store they rejected your macbook, It happened some thing like that to me and finally they fixed mine for free. I had upgrated the macbook with 8GB of new memory, so in the store they said to me that the mac need to have all the original pieces, so I called AppleCare and it wasn't really like that, back in the service I told them about that and solved.

keep trying!

is really bad not having the more powerfull GPU working, at least for me it was...

bye!

Mar 15, 2013 2:39 PM in response to Isen9

Gave this a try, but unfortunately, I was able to quickly replicate the issue after the reset, so it does not seem to be a resolution for my particular case. Many thanks for posting, though.

The good news, though is that gfxCardStatus seems to be still working. While this is certainly not an ideal situation, and it does make sense to try to get Apple to repair the video card, now that I am not getting rebooted a few times a day, and now that I can reliably replicate and resolve the issue, it should be much easier to deal with the Apple support folks, and get it done on better terms.

Mar 28, 2013 1:30 PM in response to francois-vda

Ugh, don't want to make this sound like a rant, but I've been having the same issues with kernel panics for a while now. I made an appointment at the Apple Store. The first time I went there, they apparently weren't aware of TS4088, so they kept my MBP overnight and ran some standard tests. They didn't seem to find any bad hardware, but it apparently did "suddenly restart on them" or something, so they offered a "depot repair" or something for about $300-400 (forget the exact amount).

I needed to use my laptop, and didn't want to send it away for repair yet despite the panics, so I declined and said I would visit again later. I later found TS4088, and went back to the store for them to run the specific test. After having a bit of an isse starting the test (apparently have to do some funky reboot sequence), it ran and supposidly "PASSED" with large white-on-green text on the screen.

I went to another store a few months ago, and same thing. "PASSED".

I'm getting kind of frustrated here, as it's obviously the same issue as everyone else is having. Same symptoms, same model MBP (2010 15"), same errors in the panic logs, but for whatever reason, the test Apple wrote doesn't seem to detect anything wrong.

And this is running Mountain Lion 10.8.3, too. I'm guessing Apple's been trying to fix this in software instead of replacing hardware, but it's not completely working.

I'm seriously thinking about just going the "depot repair" route, but I don't want to shell out $400, have them test the parts, see that "nothing is wrong" with the motherboard, and end up with the issue not being fixed.

The complete Panic log report shows much more information. In particular, it show what third-party kernel extensions you have loaded, how much RAM you have, what model MacBook, what version of Mac OSX, etc, etc.

There are very often OTHER FACTORS that could give you this or other errors.

If you could post the entire Panic log, Readers could give you better advice.

Mar 28, 2013 3:23 PM in response to Grant Bennet-Alder

I used to have some extensions installed for VirtualBox to run Windows in a VM, but I clean reinstalled OS X to rule that out. 10.8 seems to have lessened the panics quite a bit, but they still ocassionally happen. Running Windows 7 in Boot Camp also causes frequent random BSODs, much more often than in OS X probably because there wasn't any software workaround written for it. Even with a clean install of OS X on a completely formatted drive, I still have issues. Anyway, here's the rest of the log, which comes right after the end of the "BSD process name corresponding to current thread: kernel_task" line in the previous quote.

The backtrace shown in the first part of the log clearly shows that kexts related to the Nvidia graphics caused the panic, with lines containing "IONDRVSupport" and "IOGraphicsFamily" and "NVDAResman" and such.

All of the other kexts loaded are stock extensions from Apple, a part of the OS. The line for "com.apple.filesystems.exfat" is most likely the OS unloading a kext for the exFAT filesystem, after I ejected an external USB drive formatted as exFAT hours before the panic occured. This means it should be unrelated to the panic, as seen by the timestamp in nanoseconds.

Alas, another example of my misplaced confidence in Apple quality. Another day, another Mac, another problem. After living through the horrors of defective hardware of an eMac, a PowerBook G3, a PowerBook G4, a MacBook Pro 17, now it is the 2010 MacBook Pro i5 15 that joins this group with a design or manufacturing flaw.

For the last 2 weeks or so, my MacBook Pro i5 15" 2010 has started experiencing random but frequent panic reboots even when no particular app was running or if running no work was being done. The worst case was when it crashed/rebooted with iPhoto open and corrupting the Library, that took hours to rebuild.

Initially the panic happened when I set the lower left corner of the primary screen to act as a screensaver trigger and it seems a brief mouse passover that spot caused a panic. Since then I disabled that option and still have had these panics, at random.

The crash report sent to Apple shows NVRM

I have re-installed OS 10.8.3 and still having panics each time I start iphoto 8.1.2. When I boot in safe mode iphot works fine. Any idea about what is wrong with my MBP?

Grant,

Do you or any of the others know the exact error code that you're supposed to recieve on running the diagnostic? I've been having the exact same problems, and I won't bore you with the repititive details, but when I took my MBP in for the test, they told me that they ran the VST several times, but my computer wasn't triggering the right code that corresponds to this logic board problem amongst Apple's files.

I tried asking them what that code was, and what the one that I recieved was, but they kept bullshitting me saying that it was confidential. An error code? Confidential? Anyone know what result I'm supposed to recieve and how I can know that these guys aren't lying to me? This is not a Genius Bar, this is just an Apple-authorised service centre. The country I live in doesn't have a Genius Bar. They've tried blaming everything from my 4Gb RAM, which is apparently too low and could be triggering kernel panics, to my MDP-to-HDMI adapter, which "if not according to Apple's regulations can cause kernel panics".

They wouldn't accept a fresh install on an external HD that I gave them to demonstrate the panics. They said something might be wrong with it (the brand-new harddrive with the sticker still on), and that they have a policy about using user devices for the safety of their equipment and whatnot.

I'm tired and jaded, and I gave up on resolving this issue until recently it became unbearable. I'm going to take them a fresh install on a partition on my Mac's HD. My LCD's damaged, so I can only use an exernal screen (which rules out gfxCardStatus).

Anyone have any other tips for dealing with them? I'll also need the exact error code that you should get to qualify for this repair. God, why does this need to be such a struggle...

I recommend you to ask about what is causing the error, they have to gave you a diagnostic...

In my case running the VST didn't help, no error was triggered, but it was obvious that someting very wrong was happening, just as described in TS4088. So the Authorized service stay a few days with the macbook in order to reproduce the errror themselfs. They could reproduce the error a few times in one day and that was enoght to tell Apple and replace the logic board with this plan, because simpthoms were exactly the same as described.

Since they replced the logic board no more kernel panics ever! my macbook is working perfectly... so it's a prove the the VST not always detect the problem.

Hope you could solve this, keep trying!
