Q: Frequent Panic NVRM[0/1:0:0]: Read Error 0x00000100

I've sent my MBP i7 mid-2010 for repair with the following frequent and intermittent kernel panic to no avail: panic(cpu 2 caller 0x9cdc8f): NVRM[0/1:0:0]: Read Error 0x00000100: ... to no avail.

I happen to have subscribed to AppleCare for this machine but this did not make any difference. The approved repair center I dealt with just reformatted the HD per Apple's support instructions (twice !) and were unable to reproduce the panic. I called the Apple support folks in Ireland directly with the incident # and got told that there was basically nothing wrong with my machine and that this was bound to be caused by non-Apple software (mind you, the support guy I talked to didn't even know that XCode was an Apple product - sic). I however believe this is very likely due to a faulty NVidia video card on the logic board.

Has this happened to someone else? How did you get resolution? Right now I am stuck with an unreliable machine and seem unable to get it fixed. Any help would be VERY appreciated.

Thank you,

François

Same issue here.  2010 15" Macbook Pro I7 with the rom version 3560 on the geforce GT 330M.

I've been in and out of the apple store and on and off the phone with apple care for two weeks now.

I've tried everything including reinstall and full wipe of hard drive and reinstall the osx.  I still get the kernal panics, and blank black screens.

Today i got the 10.7.1 update, and still the kernal panics.

    Very VERY frustrating.

Omg, Im having the same issue since july. Also MBP 15'' i7 2010.

We should try to encourage people to post about this threat that is making me (and all you guys) crazy,

that may show apple that this issue is common on most of MBP 15'' i7 2010 users and then they may work out for a driver update or something else.

Now I will let my "nerves" write a little of what I'm feeling.

THE BEST OF ALL is that if you are typing or doing any research or even a PhD thesis , you lose part of it , not mentioning the REWORK.

Very frustrating.. macbook hm.. where is the PRO? i cand find it. not at my mb(P?)

I’m sure I don’t have the same problems many of you have here. I don’t have the BSOD, BUT my MacBook Pro, i7, 8gb RAM, 2010 crashed multiple times daily for 3 weeks IMMEDIATELY after installing 10.7. It had not crashed once in the previous 15 months. By “crashing” I mean all of my applications would gradually go to a “not responding” mode over about one minute. The only thing that would work would be my mouse / cursor. It would always necessitate a hard re-boot. I couldn’t really point to one thing or another causing the meltdown.

I’ve been watching seven different threads dealing with “similar” issues and have tried almost all of the “solutions”. Haha…read HUNDREDS of posts. This will probably be my only post, so I’ll lay out my observations.

    • My wife and I have identical machines…hers is totally cool. I have a bunch of utilities and 3 times as much software installed.
    • I don’t think everyone has the same problem even though it might look identical.
    • New logic board fixed / didn’t fix…oh no thought it worked…guess it didn’t…WHAT? These are COMPUTERS, not infallible machines. I just switched over from 30 years on DOS / Windows. Apple is still just a computer (still take it over Windows). My last Dell took over a year and 6 bios upgrades before it didn’t crash connecting an external hard drive. There are thousands of possible software combinations…and YES…defective hardware too. I’m 58 and have lost weeks…maybe months of my life to imperfect computers.
    • SO…I Repaired permissions, SMC reset, PRAM / NVRAreset, used gfxCardStatus, Fan Conrol, cleared cache, removed all security software, deleted “windowserver”…Nothing worked. (Was too scared to install the Nvidia driver talked about…plus didn’t seem to work except forseveral people.)
    • I finally did a Command + R > Disk Utility…and Verified the Disk. OH NO…my hard drive has errors! Did I install Lion on a disk with errors? No one said to “Verify” your disk before installing Lion. I read like 5 different articles!! So I “Repaired Disk” several times until it showed no errors. Nothing…still crashing.
    • I resort to calling Apple (got the 3 year plan.) The guy has me do all of the above. I spend 1 ½ hours with him…his longest call ever he tells me. He tells me to re-install Lion, BUT DO NOT RESTORE FROM TIME MACHINE. I hang up and reinstall Lion from the internet (Command + R). I didn’t know it would wipe my disk clean!! I said screw it and restored from Time Machine…hey…I wasn’t going to spend another whole day manually bringing stuff over unless absolutely necessary.
    • Is this what people have been referring to as a “Clean Install”? Did you check your disk for errors first?
    • It has been 2 minutes now and it seems to be working…Haha…make that 2 WEEKS now. I didn’t want to post until I was sure what worked for me. I have 10.7.1 installed for several days now too. NOT A SINGLE CRASH IN 2 WEEKS!

I will post this into all 7 threads I’ve been following and maybe this will help someone. I hope so. But if it doesn’t I won’t be too surprised because you may very well have a different issue than I had. Good luck! I love my MBP again…

    Dear all,

It's nice to know that this problem does not happen to me only; there are possibly thousands of people out there experiencing the same frustration every hour, or even minute.

Here's what I'm gonna do, and I hope each and everyone of you would do the same:

I will send an email to Mr. Jobs (sjobs@apple.com) every week on this problem, asking him NICELY to help escalate this problem so that it gets looked at. I bought Apple products not only because it's cool, but because I trust the people and the products from Apple. My experience with iPhone and iPad have been very pleasant, and I hate to let this little problem on my MBP (2010 15" i7) ruin it. If I don't see a fix for it within a month, I will send the mail daily.

I think it is only reasonable to expect a workable product when I paid for it, but now my MBP is hardly working...

Apple store ordered me a new logic board today, should be here in a couple of days for replacement. This problem isn't specific to Lion, I was able to reproduce it in Snow Leopard too by clicking the "effects" button in photobooth. Lion just makes the crashes much much more frequent.

From what I've read in the thread, I'm confident that the new logic board will fix the problem. Will report back after I have hands on evidence.

Same problem, BSOD on my (MacBookPro6,2, Intel Core i7, 2.66 GHz)

    Here is my graphiccard info:

Chipset Model:    NVIDIA GeForce GT 330M

      Device ID:    0x0a29

      Revision ID:    0x00a2

      ROM Revision:    3560

      gMux Version:    1.9.21

Is it possible to order a new logicboard with some other graphiccard on it?

    I don't want a NVIDIA GeForce GT 330M again!!!

The way I see it: if it's a faulty logic board to start with, why do I have to pay for it even if I don't have Apple Care? There should be a recall instead! Do Toyota charge you for recalling your Prius? This is ridiculous!!! What happens to Consumer's Rights?

This is what I sent to Mr. Jobs, and I hope each and everyone of you would do likewise:

Subject: 2010 MBP i7 Faulty Logic Board

    Dear Mr. Jobs,

Apparently you are a very busy person, but I hope you would pay attention to my plead. I've been tolerating this infamous Panic NVRM problem (see https://discussions.apple.com/thread/3114550?start=105&tstart=0) for some time now, but I can no longer put up with it since the recent upgrade to Lion. I'm getting it even just doing a simple  "Mission Control!"

As seen in the thread, many people resorted to replacing the logic board to get rid of the problem, but apparently the machine must be under warranty or Apple Care to get it for free. I bought Apple products not only because it's cool, but because I trust the people and the products at Apple, like I trust a certain brand of automobiles because of the brand reputation, in addition to how easy it helps me pick up chicks.

Now imagine that there is a faulty brake on my Japanese-brand (starts with a "T") eco-friendly car (no, you don't really pick up gals in one of these :P), am I supposed to pay for the replacement even if the warranty expires? There is a thing called "Recall" in the Auto industry (and other consumer products of course) due to faulty parts, and one would expect that the same practice applies to Apple products, but the Geniuses at Apple Store are certainly telling us otherwise.

I think it is only reasonable to expect a defect product (or a part) to be replaced free of charge, just like I would for some software applications I wrote and put into production in the financial institution I work in. I wouldn't tell the Business Unit that it's a new change requirement and charge them for the fix, would I?

Therefore, I sincerely hope that there will be a recall program for all MBP (or any other Mac machine for that matter) with the faulty logic board free of charge. I will be sending this plead to you weekly, and then daily, until I hear some good news from the Geniuses. You can treat it as a spam, but I will manually send this every time and encourage other people to do the same.

    Yours Sincerely,

    Alan

    Hi everyone!

I just got my Macbook back from the shop. They changed my logicboard two times, and it faulted when i got it back. I delivered it to them again and they changed it again. Now its working. Apple knows about the problem.

I got it all on the Apple Satisfaction Code.

I'm having the same problem too (2010 MacPro 15"/Snow Leopard).  It's been happening fairly often (5 times/week) where the screen just goes blank.  I was watching a video when it crash a few minutes ago, the screen went black and the audio sounded like it was in an infinite loop.  By looking at the stack trace (same as posted elsewhere in this thread), it's got to be a bug in the apple software.  The stack dump happens deep in the com.apple.driver library package and apple owns the hardware and software, so I can't imagine it's anything the end user is doing.  If you are having the same problem, post here to raise the awareness so hopefully apple can fix it quickly.  **** annoying for sure.  Please fix it!!!!!!!!!!

Same problem here, MB Pro may 2010 2.66 i7 15".

Got my first Plus in 1987, and this is the worst problem I ever had with any of my appleproducts over the 24 years I used Applestuff. I cant use external screens, cant use it for presentations and get 8+ black screens every day. I contacted Apple trough local Macsupport and waiting for answer about switching logicboard. I understand that no company can produce totally faultless products, that would be to expensive. But this fault make the product worthless and there are no fix that you can do by yourself.       Just got a mail from support that Apple approved to switch my logicboard!! Hope that will work, switching the board tomorrow, will post the result.

JanBanarne, was it warranty or AppleCare that coverd the replacement of the logicboard? Or Apple goodwill? My warranty expiered in april....

Has anyone tried to connect the external display with an USB-to-DVI adapter?
