Q: Frequent Panic NVRM[0/1:0:0]: Read Error 0x00000100

I've sent my MBP i7 mid-2010 for repair with the following frequent and intermittent kernel panic to no avail: panic(cpu 2 caller 0x9cdc8f): NVRM[0/1:0:0]: Read Error 0x00000100: ... to no avail.

I happen to have subscribed to AppleCare for this machine but this did not make any difference. The approved repair center I dealt with just reformatted the HD per Apple's support instructions (twice !) and were unable to reproduce the panic. I called the Apple support folks in Ireland directly with the incident # and got told that there was basically nothing wrong with my machine and that this was bound to be caused by non-Apple software (mind you, the support guy I talked to didn't even know that XCode was an Apple product - sic). I however believe this is very likely due to a faulty NVidia video card on the logic board.

Has this happened to someone else? How did you get resolution? Right now I am stuck with an unreliable machine and seem unable to get it fixed. Any help would be VERY appreciated.

Thank you,

François

    Hey everyone

I have been having this exact same problem on my MBP 2,66Ghz I7 with GT330M since OS X 10.6.4 i think.

The symptoms is as always that the screen suddenly goes black, unresponsive keyboard, the keyboard backlight cant be adjusted, and the last sound frame repeat itself continously.

I installed gfxCardStatus to monitor which graphics that were in use when the system crashed.  Everytime it has happened it seems like the Nvidia card has been the problem.  I thought that this had to be a software issue, so i tried to clean install OS X Lion, update the Nvidia drivers and patiently wait for an update which hopefully would fix this, but no.  Then i thought that this would be fixed in OS X Lion, but when I installed Lion, the problem got even worse.

After all this I was convinced that this had to be a hardware issue, so i called Apple Support, and they said I had to send it in for a repair. They switched my Logic board with a new one for free (although the guarantee was run out) and confirmed it to be fixed now.  After a while of use when I got it back, I started thinking it was really fixed now.  Because now i could play .mkv movies and connect it to a secondary display without any crashes.  But suddenly, black screen of death again, but this time it happened when I tried to use multiple desktops within Lion.  I tried to reset the Nvram, SMC and then rebooted.  I continued to use the machine for a while, no more crashes i thought; but next time i tried to use multiple desktops from mission control, the crash happened again.

Now I have no clue what to to, obviously the logic board replacement did not help more than that the crashes are less frequent than before.

Here is the kernel panic report that i receive after reboot:

Gustav, neither. Due to Swedish consumerlaw any company are responsible for their products productionsfault up to three year. The claim can be directed from you to Apple, but I thinhk the best way are to go through som Applecertified support. They have the standardform, and you dont have to struggle with applesupport standardsolutions. I used Machuset in Borås who were well aware with this specific problem. Apple answered overnight. Lycka till Gustav.

After further research of this error, I found the following post which I think explains in great detail how this problem is most likely (actually very, very, very likely) a software bug and most likely in the OS X operating system.  www dot embracingchaos dot com/2011/05/macbook-crashes-kernel-panics-and-coping-with-an-apple-genius dot html.  I'm not trying to be a "genius" but I am a software engineer and as such use stack traces to debug my own software.  The stack traces for this problem definitely points to apple software or possible mishandling of errors in kernel extensions (kext shown in stack dump).  So for a real "genius" to suggest its' a logic board problem is really off base, considering how many posts I've read stating their logic board was replaced but the problem still exists.

One thing I do notice is most stack traces I've seen on the web related to this problem typically have either vmware or parallels kernel extensions in the trace.  However, the final place in the trace it fails is "com.apple.driver.AppleUSBCDC" (i.e. apple software).  Also, when I've had my system fail, I've not had any virtual machine running.  I've had VMWare installed for a quite a while but didn't start seeing this problem until a couple months ago.  So I'm in great doubt the issue is with the VMWare kernel extensions.  For all of you in the ether, please post whether you have VMWare or Parallels installed and if it was running when your system crashed.  Apple has got to fix this quickly.  This issue has rendered many systems virtually unusable.  For those of you working on very important stuff, save your work very often so you don't lose it.

Hey captkdawg and all the others suffering form this unbelievable bug,

    I do believe it's a hardware issue indeed - here's why:

First of all, reading all the different threads covering this issue, it seems like there are many faulty logic boards around, so the chances of getting another faulty board when getting yours exchanged is rather high. Nevertheless there are many reports on how a logic board exchange actually CURED the problem. So if it were software, this wouldn't be happening.

My own personal experience: I've had my logic board changed due to issues with the graphics card sort of going mad every couple of weeks. I didn't have any of the issues discussed in this thread, though. Then, with the new logic board, the kernel panics kept on coming in. There's NOTHING I changed software wise in that time. I got my board exchanged again - this time with another interesting result: When I sent my MBP to sleep or shut it down completely for more than about 20mins, it froze and wouldn't respond anymore. So - another change of the logic board. With my 4th board installed, now everything works fine. No crashes / KPs for a couple of days now.

... one more thing to consider: Maybe it's a software / hardware combination that causes the crashes. Say: A certain revision of the nVidia GeForce 330m Graphics Card not going along too well with the MBP i7 2010 ??

What really bugs me about all of this is: I've also read reports about people with a new logic board, everything going smoothly for quite some time, and then - the crashes keep on coming back. The only explanation I have for this is: Graphic card heating issues ... we've probably all heard about the nVidia 330m causing problems after it got too hot ...

Ollimuc, thanks for the info.  I'm glad you got your system working again.  When did you start having the problem and how long ago was it fixed?  I haven't had my logic board replaced yet.  One thing that is strange is many people have reported it starting in the last couple of months including myself.  I find it unlikely that everyone would have hardware failures starting at around the same time.  It seems hardware failures would start at more random times.  Can you lookup the firware version for your graphics adapter and post it here?

    Hey captkdawg,

"When did you start having the problem and how long ago was it fixed?"

See my posting above - the problems started at the exact time I got a new logic board due to other problems. And they went away again with yet another logic board ... I guess this quite clearly shows it's not ONLY the software causing the prob ...

This is the info on my nVidia graphic card which seems to be working fine - been up and running for 4 days no w/o any problems whatsoever.

      Version-ID:    0x00a2

      ROM-Version:    3560

      gMux-Version:    1.9.21

I've already posted the gfx card dats from my faulty logic board in an earlier part of this thread and - interestingly enough - it was the same. So the ROM-Version alone won't help us solve this riddle ...

I assume it comes down to a mix of software / hardware causing the trouble. Some people report downgrading to 10.6.3 solves the problem for them. But then again, many machines running 10.6.8 or even 10.7 seem to be working fine ...

So I did it, today I brought my Mid 2010 MacBook Pro 15" i7 to my reseller to get a hardware check/replacement.

After wating some weeks thinking it was just a software problem that would be fixed with a simple update I am more and more considering it a hardware issue.

Although I never had any problems within 15 months using Snow Leopard and the BSOD started the day I upgraded to Lion.

I though maybe some software I have on my device causes the issue but after doing a clean installation on an external drive I was sure it even happens there. I even used the system of a colleague on an extern drive that worked well for him - when going to the second effects page in PhotoBooth - bamm - BSOD

After two phone calls with the Apple Express Lane they sent me to a local service partner to get my system checked - now I am waiting for the results.

    Will keep you updated.

    Help Please )-:

I have the same problems for months, I am at a loss- how do I solve this.....

The symptoms is as always that the screen suddenly goes black, unresponsive keyboard, the keyboard backlight cant be adjusted, and the last sound frame repeat itself continously.

I have the same reports as everyone mentions here. Macbook Pro 15in 2010.....

I'd like to se when it all started and how often.

janbanarne: Unfortunally it my company (university) that bought it, so Swedish consumerlaw doesn't apply. It's 1 year warranty.

Have my mac back from service (replaced logic card) First replaced logic card behaved exactly the same, service ordered a new one from Apple, this one worked fine. Now I hopefully are out of this mess, stressing my computers graphic on a 30 inch Cinema display and everything seems fine.

I have now had my machine back from a logic board replacement for four days, and try as I might, I have not be able to repeat the issue.

I was one of the misguided souls who forgot to get covered before warranty expired.

To those commenters that are beyond warranty/AppleCare, consider this: The standard rate to fix anything broken on your laptop is $310, or about $50 more than AppleCare would have cost. Paying a little more now and being being happy with your machine a couple of days later is, in my opinion, worth more than holding out for a massive recall. Historically, Apple has refunded customers for the cost of repairs that were done prior to a recall, so you could in theory have your cake and eat it too.

(By the way, the trip to Memphis and back was fast. I handed it over to the Apple Store on Wednesday, and Fedex was dropping it off on Saturday)

Consdiering some of the problems NVIDIA has has in the past with some of their graphics chips, I would not be surprised if this is just a "bad batch", that was brought to light when drivers were updated.

I tried to switch back to 10.6.3 on an external clean-disk , but NO still BSOD!

I have an idea: It's a heating problem. If the MBP once get "overheated" the solder melts on the logicboard (graphic-chip) and the result is loose connections that react on heat differences. That 's why i can crash minuits after a boot. You could probably solve the problem temporary (until it gets overheated next time) by resoldering the connection to the graphiccard. How to identify the graphiccard-chip on the logicboard is an other question. While you are at it, you could  add some cooling heatsinks.

Does anyone want to give it a try?

Hello out there, I would say Gustav is right, I´m a VJ and those freaks use  graphic up to the limit, like I do, and suddenly BSOD ...
And from this time on it happend from time to time, using 3D realtime FX or intense hd rendering etc...
It could be a heat destroying graphic card issue ...

I talked to Apple on Friday, they told me they are aware of the prob.. and told me to get it back to my reseller and having the L-Board replaced, also I asked if they would consider changing this 5 Month old mac to a new one, if the problem comes back ... And they did not say No ... But first ... go change the board and wait for the next crash right during a VJ Show in front of 2000 People .. yeah I like this moments ...

Thank you Apple, this is why I payed you thousands of bucks, just to let me and my work look stupid and unreliable ...
I now made a nice crashscreen telling all people, that this "VJ Show Crash" was brought to you by Apple and their reliable hardware ...

Ok up to the store tomorrow... lets see what lies they will tell me ...
