Q: Frequent Panic NVRM[0/1:0:0]: Read Error 0x00000100

I've sent my MBP i7 mid-2010 for repair with the following frequent and intermittent kernel panic to no avail: panic(cpu 2 caller 0x9cdc8f): NVRM[0/1:0:0]: Read Error 0x00000100: ... to no avail.

I happen to have subscribed to AppleCare for this machine but this did not make any difference. The approved repair center I dealt with just reformatted the HD per Apple's support instructions (twice !) and were unable to reproduce the panic. I called the Apple support folks in Ireland directly with the incident # and got told that there was basically nothing wrong with my machine and that this was bound to be caused by non-Apple software (mind you, the support guy I talked to didn't even know that XCode was an Apple product - sic). I however believe this is very likely due to a faulty NVidia video card on the logic board.

Has this happened to someone else? How did you get resolution? Right now I am stuck with an unreliable machine and seem unable to get it fixed. Any help would be VERY appreciated.

Thank you,

François

Happens to me too. Mid 2010 MBP 15" i7. Thought it was Lion to start with so did a clean install and Partitioned my HD and Reinstalled Snow Leopard aswell. It still crashes 4-5 times a day on 10.6.8 and 10.7.1 also runs hot even just after booting up.

Installed gfxCardStatus and SMC Fan Control as a work round but cant use my Cinema display now due to the graphics setting required to run a Stable System.

Maybe Apple can resolve this by a Software or Graphics Driver update as My Applecare ran out in April.

I'm hoping its not a Hardware Fix only.

Hate too burst your bubble but it certainly sounds like hardware after everything you have tried.

I suggest you either serious start checking out the hardware in your Mac or have someone do that for you becuase that appears to be where your problem is located.

Yes that's what I'm starting to think now Allan!

Will wait a while, struggle through wait for any Software updates if any! before taking any Hardware related Steps.

Update, I took my MBP mid-2010 i7 to the apple store in Boulder, CO.  They kept it over night and ran diagnostics.  They were able to get the kernel panic to happen right away.  They said it definitely happened when the graphics switched modes as noted by many others in this post.   Then they reset the PRAM and ran more comprehensive tests overnight with no failures.  Brought it home and it kernel paniced again the next day.  They said a logic board replacement was the next step.  15 month old, $2500 MacBook and they want to charge for the logic board replacement.  I'm just having a very hard time believing that my problem is a one-off problem and not a manufacturer defect either in software or hardware.  A bunch of crap in my book.

I'm having the issue too. 2010 i7 Macbook pro, 8gb ram, 512gb SSD (apple supplied) £2,500+ laptop....

Apple need to push a patch for the graphics switching, or replace our hardware......

Since I have been experiencing the same things on my MBP I7 (2010) I thought I would give the timeline that I have been experiencing.

    • Machine was rock solid as of May 2011, did not renew Applecare
    • 10.6.8 update installed, occaisional black screen crashes began. I thought "software" and continued using machine.
    • 10.6.8 "Pre Lion: update installed, more frequent black screen crashes, made appointment at Genius bar and took in for diagnostics. Research online showed Lion install would allow me to create a crash, so I installed a fresh clean install on Lion and recreated the crash, felt good, headed to genius appointment where I could not recreate the crash.
    • Genius ran diagnostices, found nothing wrong with hardware, sent me home with machine. Arrived home, machine crashed within 10 minutes of use in Lion.
    • Called Applecare again, was told "you must pay for a service call", asked for supervisor, when transferred I got a dialtone.
    • More online investigation revealed that sending an email to the "Boss" might be the way to go. Letter crafted, sent, and response call from Executive Relations rep received.
    • Appointment made for logic board replacment.
    • Machine dropped off at local Apple Store, during the drop off, the crash was recreated (was nice to finally be able to show then what I meant)
    • Machine due back this Friday

    Will update the experience.

Add me to those experiencing this strange bug. I have an early-2010 MacBook Pro 17" i7 (Lion). But my observations are a little different.

While I seem to get the same error message, my screen and computer freeze—not a blank screen. And this happens extremely randomly. Sometimes, it's while browsing in Google Chrome. Sometimes, it's while recording a podcast (happened three times while I was live-streaming my clean-comedy podcast!), and sometimes, it has happened almost immediately after rebooting from a crash.

However, it has never happened when I'm using the integrated graphics.

I ran diagnostics, flush the PRAM, and everything else except taking it to Apple. I'm a freelance web designer, so I really can't afford to be without my computer for long.

But my 2010 MacBook Pro isn't the only victim!

My wife has an early 2011 MacBook Pro 13" base model. She doesn't have an nVidia GPU, but her PC is freezing even more than mine. Usually while she's playing Minecraft. But she gets no error message on reboot, and diagnostics reveal no problems.

Both MacBook Pros have AppleCare and both are running the latest updates of OS X Lion. My 2010 17" has a lot more software and customizations. My wife's has mostly the core software.

I'll post my error the next time I get one, just to be sure I've having the same problem.

Well, I am having this exact same problem! It has started crashing about a month ago. I have a MBP i5 with

Chipset Model:    NVIDIA GeForce GT 330M

      Type:    GPU

      Bus:    PCIe

      PCIe Lane Width:    x16

      VRAM (Total):    256 MB

      Vendor:    NVIDIA (0x10de)

      Device ID:    0x0a29

      Revision ID:    0x00a2

I am the only one going through this with an i5?

    Hi all,

this post has been very helpful for me. I posted before sharing I had the same problem. I am on a i5 that's just over a year old. Installing gfxCardStatus and setting to 'Integrated Only' proved a useful interim fix for me, so without this discussion I would have had many more crashes and no clue how to approach it with Apple.

I provided a link to this discussion already with my Genius bar booking.

The Genius did not bother to try to recreate the problem, he seemed familiar with it. He said that he didn't know if a software update may fix it in the future. My regular warranty had just run out but I did not even have to make a request, he offered to replace the Logic board without charge.

I would have strongly pressed for that even if I had been well beyond my warranty as this is more of a design flaw coming to light with some delay - akin to a Toyota safety recall situation - rather than a hardware 'failure' / breakdown and therefore warranty issue.

Since it's my main work machine, he created a repair booking which reserved the one logic board they had in stock - I then had 5 days to drop it off and we agreed I'd do so on a Saturday morning - they had it fixed within a few hours and I picked it up the same day.

While the problem has been annoying, I am very pleased with Apple's handling of my case I must say.

Thanks to all who have shared and posted here for saving me hours of time and helping me sort this problem!

    Good luck for yourselves!

    Stefan

What started happening to me is really weird. Almost every time I hit APPLE+SPACE (command+space) keys for spotlight search, it freezes on me. It was not doing this to me before, and freezes were sporadic at best. But, now almost everytime this is happening.

It is really really weird... Have you seen this behavior before?

    Thanks!

I installed gfxCardStatus and with the integrated card I experienced three crashes in about 10 minutes. So the problem was exacerbated. Since switching to the dedicated NVIDIA card, I have not experienced the problem, but I suspect I will because I had set the option in the Energy Saver prefernce pane to use only the NVIDIA card and I still experienced the black screen crash. It is possible that the controller itself that switches the cards may be an issue. It is really difficult to tell. This is where the wall that Apple builds around their products is a detrement, not an asset. Hopefully Apple is paying attention to the crash reports and working to resolve this problem ASAP.

I took my mid 2010 15" i7 macBook Pro back to my Apple Authorized Reseller. I simulated the problem with an clean Lion install on an external disk with launching Photo Booth and selecting the secend set of Effects.

The logic board was replaced and all is working now.
