Q: Frequent Panic NVRM[0/1:0:0]: Read Error 0x00000100

I've sent my MBP i7 mid-2010 for repair with the following frequent and intermittent kernel panic to no avail: panic(cpu 2 caller 0x9cdc8f): NVRM[0/1:0:0]: Read Error 0x00000100: ... to no avail.

 

I happen to have subscribed to AppleCare for this machine but this did not make any difference. The approved repair center I dealt with just reformatted the HD per Apple's support instructions (twice !) and were unable to reproduce the panic. I called the Apple support folks in Ireland directly with the incident # and got told that there was basically nothing wrong with my machine and that this was bound to be caused by non-Apple software (mind you, the support guy I talked to didn't even know that XCode was an Apple product - sic). I however believe this is very likely due to a faulty NVidia video card on the logic board.

 

Has this happened to someone else? How did you get resolution? Right now I am stuck with an unreliable machine and seem unable to get it fixed. Any help would be VERY appreciated.

    Same here. As of right now, I haven't had any loss of work due to this error. But if it did ... well that would be the last straw. I can only hope some fix comes out soon. I hear that the problem is pretty persistent with the newest MBP models.

    It is very frustrating. In my case, I never know when it is going to occur. I recently reset the PRAM, which so far has helped remedy my problem. I went through seven chimes and not the recommended two (or maybe it was three) that Apple suggests in their support documentation. Not sure if it is entirely fixed, but this is the longest I have gone without a crash.

    I did a hardware test.

    The tests found nothing wrong.

    And now strange things are unlikely to kernel panic.

    And after two days I've been testing the hardware.

    Previously, at least once a day, became a kernel panic.

    This remains, if the convergence behavior is strange.

    Hmm... very interesting and thank you for that. I sort of have a sure-fire way of crashing my machine on an application launch. I will reset the PRAM later today and report here if my machine did or didn't crash based on the test I mentioned.

     

    Question: I understand resetting the PRAM but I don't understand what you mean by the word "chimes". Could you please explain? Thanks again.

    Okay that was an exercise in futitility. But all hope is not lost ... I hope.

     

    I understand what 'chimes' mean now. While resetting the PRAM I let it ring 4 times. After the 4th I released the keys.

     

    1. Set gfxCardStatus to "Discrete Only".
    2. Plugged in my external monitor, keyboard and mouse.
    3. Closed lid and let computer go to sleep. Woke it up again using the keyboard.
    4. Launched the test App .... and sure enough, crashed at exactly the same place, on cue.

     

    So sorry to report this. Resetting PRAM did not work for me.

    Going to wait on Apple.

    I had the same issue and for it me started after upgrading the RAM. Seems the serial number according to Apple's service site supported the faster RAM 1333 yet when I added the RAM I had nothing but problems. Ended up going to 1066 chips and the machine is back to 100% perfect performance.  I think a firmware update at some point caused the issue of not recognizing the faster 1333 RAM.

    I have the same issues.. MPB 2010 (6,2) i5. First started occuring for me when I upgraded to Lion (10.7.X), there was usually a 50/50 chance of my Mac panicing after waking from sleep.. really furstrating!

     

    Downgrading to Snow Leopard (10.6.8) has made the issue re-occur less (down to once a week or so) but it still happens.

     

    Has anyone tried 10.7.2 yet? There doesn't appear to be any graphics updates listed in the release notes..

    Resetting PRAM doesn't fix the issue. Had this less under Snow Leopard, under Lion seems to happen a lot more and in batches... then is stable for a time.

     

    Apple need to sort this out, I grow very tired of this...

    Thanks for that!! Its wonderful that they have finally come out and acknowledged it. But I don't buy it that none of of the newest models have the exact same problem, as mentioned in the article.

    Yes and hopefully it comes quickly! I would like to be able to run Lion for iCloud etc.
