Q: Frequent Panic NVRM[0/1:0:0]: Read Error 0x00000100

I've sent my MBP i7 mid-2010 for repair with the following frequent and intermittent kernel panic to no avail: panic(cpu 2 caller 0x9cdc8f): NVRM[0/1:0:0]: Read Error 0x00000100: ... to no avail.

I happen to have subscribed to AppleCare for this machine but this did not make any difference. The approved repair center I dealt with just reformatted the HD per Apple's support instructions (twice !) and were unable to reproduce the panic. I called the Apple support folks in Ireland directly with the incident # and got told that there was basically nothing wrong with my machine and that this was bound to be caused by non-Apple software (mind you, the support guy I talked to didn't even know that XCode was an Apple product - sic). I however believe this is very likely due to a faulty NVidia video card on the logic board.

Has this happened to someone else? How did you get resolution? Right now I am stuck with an unreliable machine and seem unable to get it fixed. Any help would be VERY appreciated.

Thank you,

François

    Same problem here, MBP 15" i7 mid-2010.

Started occasionally on Snow Leopard, and became unbearable on Lion.

Got to this post after first interaction with Apple Care.

At second interaction they aknowledged the problem, and said that a fix is in the works.

I asked the customer care representative to note in my issue case that I am ok to wait a little to get a fix, given that using gfxCardStatus circumvents the problem for the time being, but that beyond a certain limit I would only accept a swap with a different model, cause the issue will hinder my business (e.g. not being able to do a powerpoint presentation on an external screen !)

It has been my experience that upgrading a computer with proglem only makes the problems worst.

A computer with problems show be fixed prior to upgrading the operating system.

lpisati: I AGREE WITH YOU 100%. I feel your frustration since I am going through the exact same problem.

I have to (I have no choice in the matter) to use an external monitor for group work, knowing full well the system will crash at ANY time, (which it has - only my twitchy "saving" literally Saved the Day).

Its really pathetic (actually an EPIC kind of pathetic) that I spent extra money on a machine that sells itself on its OS and machine's build quality and reliability, only to be constantly on the lookout as to when its going to inevitably crash.

Wanted to upgrade to Lion, but I have decided to completely hold-off on that since Lion exarcebates the problem. I thought there was enough sandboxing inside Lion to prevent this kind of total crash (at least I read that somewhere).

What's really funny is that I am looking enviously at my colleague who has a 2008 MBP running Lion plugged into iCloud!! What a crappy way to luck out. Usually you luck out because you have a newer model of ... pretty much anything!!

Here is a post (if you guys havent already seen it) where there is a link to CNET article where apple has FINALLY acknowledged this issue...

    https://discussions.apple.com/message/16358241?tstart=0#16358241

I am not able to use the gfxCardStatus workaround as I have a secondary monitor in DVI and the integrated graphics processor only seems to work with the main display.

Keeping my fingers crossed for apple to provide a fix!

Oh I hope a solution comes out soon. My macbook pro used to only have this problem once in a while when only playing games. Now it's happening more frequently and while just web browsing. Ugh.

I hoped that the OS X 7.2 upgrade would fix this BSOD problem, but alas! Fortunately my 2010 15" Macbook Pro is still covered by an extended He education warranty, so I phoned up Apple technical support and explained that - after trying everything - I could only work with gsfx status installed and set to 'integrated only'. He urged me to bring the machine in and Apple would 'fix it'. I shall follow this advice, without much confidence, and will report back on the result. I am completely fascinated to learn what lies behind this glitch, but I guess that will remain a secret, until it isn't.

As I wrote earlier in this forum: I got an USB to DVI-adater ( http://plugable.com/products/uga-2k-a/ ) and together with gfxcardstatus, my external monitor work fine, not a single crash! as long as I stay with Snowleopard. Lion crashes before gfxcardstatus kicks in but after that it works. The adapter is a bit slow and not as cristalsharp as the NVIDIA but OK, sceenshots doesn't work and sometimes firefox refuses to open a new window.  I recomend it, it's better that any crash...

By the way I hate graphicscards, I have another MacBook Pro 15", this one is from early/mid 2008, guess what: the graphicscard on it broke last week! Internal/external monitor are black, sometimes I get beep responses from keyboard input.

A Small Ray of Hope. (or not)

Sorry if this might look like a rehash to some of you but perhaps its not to others.

I started experiencing the BSOD on Windows 7 (BootCamp), while playing Batman:AA. I did all the Security Updates in Windows 7, then went to search for newer NVidia GT 330M drivers (Windows showed that my drivers prior to update was dated at 1/1/2011). I downloaded the newer drivers from NVidia's site, (released on August 3, 2011) and did a clean install.

I loaded up Batman:AA and ran through the same process when I encountered the BSOD earlier. And the BSOD occurred again ... and then, lo and behold, I had a really nice surprise.

Within a couple of seconds (like 2 to 3 seconds): the game came back, at exactly the same place where it crashed.

    This occurred TWO more times!!!

I had read somewhere on this board (I don't think its on this thread however) that Windows 7 somehow detects a problem with the graphics card driver, and resets the driver, and everything just returns to normal. Well I guess this is what happened to me too.

    So this raised a question:

What happens when you update NVidia Drivers while loaded into Windows in BootCamp? I mean I know what happens, but how will OSX react to this update? I didn't think I would find any difference. I checked and nope, no difference. Same reproducible BSOD crash in OSX.

I tried to install the latest version of OSX drivers from Nvidia's site but no go (driver filename: Retail_256.02.25f1v1; released June 24, 2011). It says "This computer will not support this NVidia graphics solution".

Maybe, just maybe, its just a driver issue. And maybe if Apple or Nvidia will allow a clean update to the latest drivers provided by NVidia we could solve this problem right now.

Or, to any Apple OS Engineers who might be listening out there, we love your product, but maybe you should take a hint from Windows 7 and perhaps get the OS to reset the video-card's driver instead of crashing with it.

Apple is covering a lot of those 2008 model video card issues under an extended warranty for up to four years from the date of purchase. Take it to a repair center and have them run the GPT on it.

    Having the same problem here.

    Mid 2010 i7, GeForce GT 330M

Is there any 'true' solution to this yet? Has Apple responded to this yet?

I havn't been able to work properly for the past weeks...

What I'm getting out of all this is:

Get gfxcardstatus. Set it to only use Intel HD Graphics. At least have a working machine & wait for Apple to solve this freakin' crysis.

Also, people that still have their warranty can get a new logic board. What can people (like me) do, that don't have warranty anymore?

Did I get that right so far?
