Q: Frequent Panic NVRM[0/1:0:0]: Read Error 0x00000100

I've sent my MBP i7 mid-2010 for repair with the following frequent and intermittent kernel panic to no avail: panic(cpu 2 caller 0x9cdc8f): NVRM[0/1:0:0]: Read Error 0x00000100: ... to no avail.

I happen to have subscribed to AppleCare for this machine but this did not make any difference. The approved repair center I dealt with just reformatted the HD per Apple's support instructions (twice !) and were unable to reproduce the panic. I called the Apple support folks in Ireland directly with the incident # and got told that there was basically nothing wrong with my machine and that this was bound to be caused by non-Apple software (mind you, the support guy I talked to didn't even know that XCode was an Apple product - sic). I however believe this is very likely due to a faulty NVidia video card on the logic board.

Has this happened to someone else? How did you get resolution? Right now I am stuck with an unreliable machine and seem unable to get it fixed. Any help would be VERY appreciated.

Thank you,

François

Understandably, I see why you would say that. Obviously there is something different about my system that causes it to crash with greater frequency while using the integrated card, whereas most everyone in the thread can run that card with no problem. But I still believe my problem is the same problem. The symptoms are the same. My guess is that it is the controller, driver or other firmware. I could be doing something different from other users, although I don't know what, and that is the cause for the difference. Apple is aware of the problem so I am awaiting the fix just as everyone else. Hopefully it will resolve the problem for me and others. I look forward to reporting the results.

@elliethebug: So they replaced your Mid 2010 MBP for a Spring 2011 one?? About your question, no, this issue only affects Mid 2010 MBP's. Even if you bought it on January 2011 (like me), your MBP can only be affected if it's a 6,2.

@themachelper: Can you post the log of one of the panics you had when using the Intel card?

If Apple doesn't step up and resolve this in 2 weeks, I'm shipping this useless $2000 box back to them.

Apple - Recall these defective laptops already before you antagonize and lose even more customers.

Hmmm... I understand your antagonism against Windoze.

But if you read one of my earlier posts (at least in my experience) its ironic that BootCamped Windows can actually circumvent this problem somehow. I'm not sure how. I have recovered from several BSOD's on Windows that show the exact same symptoms as when booted into OSX (the Black Screen of course, and the audio stuck on a loop).

Everyone here please note: There are specific symptoms related to the bug that is being discussed on this thread (IMHO):

    1. The main screen (or external monitor, or both) suddenly blacks out.
    2. If you were listening to audio prior to the point above, then you will most likely hear a part of that audio stuck on a loop, as soon as your main display or connected monitors black out.
    3. The NVRM Read Error Panic log that shows up right after a forced reboot.

I am aware of only these many common symptoms. I am not sure if there are any others that exist. If they do, please do post them.

I would only add that the backlight under the keyboard lights up and remains lit. The whole computer becomes totally unresponsive, and the only way to get out of the BSOD is to force a hard reboot by pressing and holding the computer's power button.

As an update, I took my MBP to the Apple store here in Charleston, SC. They told me they had seen this before, and had solved it by replacing the logicboard. They offered to do it in-house, at a $500 cost, or send it in to Apple at a $300 cost. I told them to hold up on it while I spoke to the people at Applecare and got them to do it for free (I am supposedly 4 months "out of warranty", although the problem started well inside the warranty period, in March 2011.) In the meantime, I saw here that Apple had acknowledged the issue, so I went back to the Apple store and retrieved my MBP. I am now in a holding pattern, waiting for Apple to issue a fix, that hopefully will be cost-free, dispensing with the need for a class-action suit.

The gfx fix has worked like a charm for me, too, btw.

Thank you very much for that report neldyn. Yes, I have the backlit keyboard symptom as well!

I have been (and I presume so have others) been on the lookout for the dollar amounts Apple is throwing around to get this issue fixed. The amounts you mentioned in your post is really very informative. Thank you once again.

Makes one wonder how they come up with these numbers. Cupertino is very aware of this problem of course. Its so very evil of them to actually know that a software fix is in the works while simultaneously offering a costly hardware fix, which, as some people have reported on this thread and elsewhere, is a very hit-or-miss proposition.

Highly doubt the fix will be software.

The Apple Geniuses are not much different than other customer service agents who

delegate blame and cover their own interests before the customers'.

If they only realized how much long term damage they are causing

    through this nonsense.

Yes I have the backlit keyboard symptom also.

I have looked on the Nvidia site for a driver update and they don't seem to even have a driver for Lion for our discrete card. This could be at the crux of the problem.

I only have 30 days of hardware warranty left and really don't know what to do. Wait for software fix as per the Apple issue acknowledgment or go through the pain of an Apple store visit and logic board replacement (which might not fix the issue anyway)

Apple support is overloaded, a victim of Apples success unfortunately.....

I'm having the same issue. For no reason, my MBP just stops. Keyboard is still backlit, but everything else is unresponsive. This is what the panic report shows after restarting via the power button:

Well, for those that have not gotten their logic board replaced, there might be a resolution:

    http://support.apple.com/kb/TS4088

It showed up in Software Update today. Would be curious how it works for everyone

@ianmartorell You are right on the money!  I do have the 6,2 Mid 2010 i5 and Apple is going to replace it with a Spring 2011.  I was not going to settle for an other replacement part or a same series machine...

On an other note, I just ran the upgrade for the backlight issue and I will let everybody know whether it solved that problem.

    Keep your fingers crossed!

Finally Apple fixed it. This resolved the problem for me.  Fingers crossed, but my previous methods of instantly crashing no longer work.

I'm pretty amazed it took this long to fix. My computer has hardly been usable since I upgraded to Lion back in July.

Hopefully this is over for good and I can get back to work.

The software/fix update seems to be for Lion users only. The KB advises Snow Leopard users who have experienced this problem to take their machine to a genius bar. To confirm that Software Update doesn't offer the fix for this Snow Leopard machine.

So I shall take my machine in to the new Apple store here in Hong Kong to put their genius to the test and see what they have to say. (Unfortunate term, genius - it sets up such "awesome" expectations.)
