Q: Frequent Panic NVRM[0/1:0:0]: Read Error 0x00000100

I've sent my MBP i7 mid-2010 for repair with the following frequent and intermittent kernel panic to no avail: panic(cpu 2 caller 0x9cdc8f): NVRM[0/1:0:0]: Read Error 0x00000100: ... to no avail.

I happen to have subscribed to AppleCare for this machine but this did not make any difference. The approved repair center I dealt with just reformatted the HD per Apple's support instructions (twice !) and were unable to reproduce the panic. I called the Apple support folks in Ireland directly with the incident # and got told that there was basically nothing wrong with my machine and that this was bound to be caused by non-Apple software (mind you, the support guy I talked to didn't even know that XCode was an Apple product - sic). I however believe this is very likely due to a faulty NVidia video card on the logic board.

Has this happened to someone else? How did you get resolution? Right now I am stuck with an unreliable machine and seem unable to get it fixed. Any help would be VERY appreciated.

Thank you,

François

Mike140, if you're still experiencing problems after applying the fix, I would suggest you seek service from Apple, as indicated in the KB article. One of the Mac sites, perhaps MacWorld, also stated that Apple would address this problem up to two years after the factory warranty expires, but I don't know where they saw that. At any rate, Apple knows of this issue and it couldn't hurt to have your notebook serviced. Just let them know up front that it is a known issue and you were instructed by Apple, via the KB article, to seek their assistance.

I set gfxCardStatus to "Dynamic Switching", then quit it, stopped it from loading at startup and made sure that automatic graphics switching was enabled in System Preferences. I've been using it thusly for the past two days and haven't had any blackouts or BSOD's. We'll see if everything keeps going well, but today I played Assassin's Creed II for a while and had no problem with the GPU (I've "stress tested" it with all the applications I could think of). Hope this helps.

Thanks ianamortel! Yes it does help, thank you very much for replying back.

Okay so I am guessing that while you played AC2 on Lion, the GPU must have heated up quite a bit and you still didn't have any problems. That is GOOD NEWS because according to this article from CNET a heat issue could have been another cause for the blackout.

I have 2 more questions. If you or others could please care to comment: Do you/anyone have Windows on BootCamp? Did you experience any BSOD's while booted into Windows?

    Thanks once again!

Three full days without a crash or a freeze...and I was starting to think we were out of the woods...Still planning on swapping my machine out once Apple calls me to let me know it is at the store.

Can this issue be so darned hard to figure out?! I suppose it is...

    FYI:

I do not do on line or off line gaming, I mostly write lesson plans, worksheets, ppts for the HS biology/Env.Sci classes. I do include links to YouTube videos, discovery education, etc...And if I get some time left I indulge on Hulu.

    Yikes!

Okay. I do have Bootcamp installed and haven't experienced any panics while booted to Windows (not even under intense GPU usage). However, the issue reappeared yesterday for the first time since I installed the video update. It's only happened one time, though, and while booted to Lion. Here's the stacktrace.

I'm considering wiping out my hard drive and performing a clean Lion installation. Don't know why, but I feel like installing the video update as the very first thing might help at getting rid of any malicious reminiscences of the issue. Will try if it happens again.

The screen of my laptop just goes black but the keyboard light stays on..after i turn it off pressing the power button there is also a small "Click" Sound.. when i start again there is this message that my Mac has been shut down unexpectedly... and there is this huge list of threads but one of the key words that catch my eyes are.. Welcome to the party Ashhab21, we're all in the same situation as you. Fortunately, there are two things you can do now:

    1. Quick Fix: Install gfxCardStatus. It's an application that enables you to switch between your faulty discrete graphics card (Nvidia GeForce 330M) and your less-powerful integrated one (Intel HD Graphics). As you may or may not have noticed, the issue you are experiencing is being caused by your Nvidia Card, and that's the reason it only arouses when you're using software that tells your OS to switch to the more powerful GPU (or when your laptop comes back from sleep). With gfxCardStatus, you can disable your Nvidia card by selecting Integrated Only from the icon in the menubar, and the problem will most likely be gone. As long as you stick with the Intel card, of course.

    2. Apple's Fix: Apple has very recently acknowledged and provided an update that supposedly fixes this issue. You can find more info here. However, note that the update will only work for you if you're running Lion. If not, you should take your MBP back to the Apple service in your country and refer them to the link I posted above.

Personally, Apple's update has significantly reduced the occurrences of the issue in my MBP, but has definitely not solved the problem. I've already had two of these blackouts in the past three days, the last one being about five minutes ago, erasing what I had written of this post when it was half way done.

Your NVRAM is fine. They would need to change your entire logic board. They will do it if you insist, but it's not a guaranteed fix.

NVRAM stands for Non-Volatile Random-Access Memory, meaning it stays after your computer is rebooted. It has nothing to do with this issue as far as I know.

About Bootcamp, many users (including myself) have experienced the very same type of kernel panics (screen goes black, keyboard backlight stays on) while running Windows, so I guess you're lucky if this doesn't happen to you.

Are you running Lion? If so, have you upgraded to it recently? The issue only started happening to me after installing Lion (it also started happening on Windows at that point), and going back to Snow Leopard fixed it for both Mac and Windows. Very weird.

So far changing to Integrated Graphics have worked, no Panic since then. I just restarted my NVRAM and PRAM with the combination Command-Option-P-R keys... now going back to Dynamic mode...lets see if the sutuation imporved
