Q: Frequent Panic NVRM[0/1:0:0]: Read Error 0x00000100

I've sent my MBP i7 mid-2010 for repair with the following frequent and intermittent kernel panic to no avail: panic(cpu 2 caller 0x9cdc8f): NVRM[0/1:0:0]: Read Error 0x00000100: ... to no avail.

I happen to have subscribed to AppleCare for this machine but this did not make any difference. The approved repair center I dealt with just reformatted the HD per Apple's support instructions (twice !) and were unable to reproduce the panic. I called the Apple support folks in Ireland directly with the incident # and got told that there was basically nothing wrong with my machine and that this was bound to be caused by non-Apple software (mind you, the support guy I talked to didn't even know that XCode was an Apple product - sic). I however believe this is very likely due to a faulty NVidia video card on the logic board.

Has this happened to someone else? How did you get resolution? Right now I am stuck with an unreliable machine and seem unable to get it fixed. Any help would be VERY appreciated.

Thank you,

François

And again it happened to me. It seems to happen each time I'm trying to open rich content like PDF, RTF files. Seriously annoying given that I'm in the middle of writing my thesis and I live in Preview and Textedit.

to bad I can't use an external monitor anymore - will have to wait for the first OS update, or did anyone find a solution? maybe changing graphic card drivers?

    Hey tOMPSON,

there are drivers on the nVidia page. But you cannot install them. The way it seems, the gfx driver is hard coded into the OS and can only be changed when Apple releases an official update. Or - maybe someone can dig up a solution here, but simple click-and-install doesn't work.

I doubt an OS update will bring a solution. Having spent some time on the phone with Apple, they refuse to see a problem here - they claim they don't know about it. The solution seems to be spending a couple of 1000$ on a new MBP - at least that's the way Apple would like it ... . Incredible, considering there are many dozen reports of this phenomenon OS X > 10.6.7 | MBP 15" 2010 gfx driver incompatibility when in discrete mode all over the web ...

    hi tOMPSON and ollimuc,

actually you can install the drivers from the nvidia page - but it doesn't solve the problem.

If you still want to try: open the .dmg, then right click the .mpkg-file and choose "show package contents" (or similar in english as i have a danish version). In the folder "Contents" you will find a sub-folder "packages" containing the drivers.

You can install them by double-clicking each of them. I read that the order doesn't matter, but I would recommend to click the file "preinstall.pkg" first, followed by the three drivers, last is "postinstall.pkg".

"Preinstall.pkg will create a backup of your existing drivers in "Library - Application Support - Nvidia".

But as written earlier - it doesn't solve the problem (at least not on my machine).

    cheers,

    jan

    hi everyone,

    just a quick follow up:

it seems that my kernel panics stopped!

The last couple days i experienced a new strange behaviour of my macbook, when putting it to sleep by closing the lid it would get extremely hot. Putting it to sleep using the shortcut resulted in the screen coming back on after ca. 10 seconds, while the power light would flash very slowly.

I read that a SMC reset would be the frist step to fix that (new, additional) problem.

After the SMC reset everything was fine again, the mac is much cooler now than ever before.

Then i tried with the Nvidia card again, an surprisingly no crashes! - I could run skype (that was a guaranteed crash before), besides a HD video on youtube, and running Google Earth having a second monitor connected (i made a screenshot because i could not believe it myself ).

Of course the graphis card is only working properly since yesterday and this doesn't really mean much in this case, but i was hoping that some of you could try the same and share their experience here:

I think it is a combination of the SMC reset and the new drivers I installed coming directly from NVIDIA (i had done SMC resets prior to the installation of the new drivers without any result).

Here is the post that explains how to install NVIDIA's drivers: http://forums.macrumors.com/archive/index.php/t-1145844.html

A second thought I got is: maybe there is a problem with the SMC? After i got my logicboard exchanged i had a period of around a month where everything was fine, and then the problems returned. I found a comment telling the same here: https://discussions.apple.com/thread/2420192?start=1575&tstart=0 (post by Willem-A)

    Hey Jan,

thanks a bunch for keeping us in the loop! I keep my thumbs crossed your problem is solved now. But I'd wait for another couple of days in order to find out whether or not this really worked. In my case, sometimes one specific action can trigger the Panic, like using effects in PhotoBooth. Then at other times it doesn't result in a Panic at all.

Power light not working properly, MBP running way too hot, sleep mode not working correctly ... same here, same here. This wasn't an issue until 10.6.8 . SMC reset? I know the drill - I've done them plentiful ...

Anyway: Pls keep us updated about how your MBP behaves the next couple of days! Thanks for sharing and good luck.

    hi everyone,

just to keep you updated - i just had another crash. I think i just got too optimistic after not having a crash in more than 24 hours for the first time in months ...

Anyways, i have the feeling that something is wrong with the SMC. I can't say if this is a seperate problem or directly linked to the Nvidia crashes.

But, each time (just before a crash) i put my computer asleep, i can see that the sleep Indicator light behaves strangely. It blinks without a certain pattern, slowly than very fast or doesn't dim down all the way at all. While "asleep" the graphics card doesn't seem to be sleeping. The computer is getting hot and when putting the mac asleep with the lid open, the screen will come back on after ca. 10 seconds (as written before).

After a the SMC reset everything is fine again, but only for a while.

Does any of you experience similar problems?

A random thought just ocurred to me: Lion is defaulting to 64-bit mode. I have forced my MBP into 32-bit mode (as per http://support.apple.com/kb/ht3773) and will see if I can cause the driver to fail.

It's a complete stab in the dark, but I would be interested in hearing if it works for anyone else.

Nevermind, running on the discrete driver in 32-bit mode lasted about 1o minutes before going black screen.

wibrandy, sorry to hear the solution didn't work.

@tOMPSON: I highly doubt the next update will fix the problem. Why should it? Apple has acknowledged a problem here so far.

I'm wondering why not EVERY 2010 i7 is affected. Mine wasn't until I got a new logic board. What about you guys? Did you get your 2010 MBP at the end of the production time? Did you get a logic board exchange? There must be some similarity here ... What I suspect: There must me a revised nVidia chip out there that causes the problem, whereas other gfx card don't. Just my two cents ...

My logic board was replaced in September after a liquid spill
