Q: Frequent Panic NVRM[0/1:0:0]: Read Error 0x00000100

I've sent my MBP i7 mid-2010 for repair with the following frequent and intermittent kernel panic to no avail: panic(cpu 2 caller 0x9cdc8f): NVRM[0/1:0:0]: Read Error 0x00000100: ... to no avail.

I happen to have subscribed to AppleCare for this machine but this did not make any difference. The approved repair center I dealt with just reformatted the HD per Apple's support instructions (twice !) and were unable to reproduce the panic. I called the Apple support folks in Ireland directly with the incident # and got told that there was basically nothing wrong with my machine and that this was bound to be caused by non-Apple software (mind you, the support guy I talked to didn't even know that XCode was an Apple product - sic). I however believe this is very likely due to a faulty NVidia video card on the logic board.

Has this happened to someone else? How did you get resolution? Right now I am stuck with an unreliable machine and seem unable to get it fixed. Any help would be VERY appreciated.

Thank you,

François

I've also given up the Lion ghost, as it were, and scraped the drive and reverted to 10.6.7. I got there by using the original OS disk that came with the machine (10.6.3) and using the combo-update (around 900 Mb). So far, I'm back to normal without a single panic or black screen of death.

I took my machine into the Genius Bar three times, but the answer I kept getting - no matter how much I protested or showed this and other threads about the issue and the Ars article - is that unless or until Apple says it's a problem, it's not a problem, and it "must be" something in an application, or another driver, or surely something I have done to my machine. I don't necessarily blame the Genius Bar employees because they have about an hour to work any problem and there's nothing in their database or knowledge base about this issue, so they can only suggest "the usual suspects."

I frankly cannot continue to use the mahine as broken as Lion made it. I was sending in all my reports, I showed them all to the Genius Bar, but the opinion was that there was "nothing they could do." So, uh, thanks a lot, Apple. Job well done!

I went in with a fresh install of Lion on an external drive and demonstrated the issue by clicking on the second effects tab of PhotoBooth. Nothing came up with any of the hardware diagnostics but based on the articles, demonstration and kernel panic logs, the tech was willing to replace the logic board under warranty and I haven't had an issue since. Prior to bringing it in I had replicated the issue in 10.6.7, 10.6.8, & Lion, w/ or w/o an external monitor attached, though it seemed the issue was more easily replicated without an external monitor attached.

I am experiencing greatly increased kernel panics after installing Lion. It seems to be hardware related. It specifically occurs with the most frequency when I have a Fantom Drives 2GB external USB drive plugged in (GF2000EU).

I restored back to Snow Leopard right after upgrading the Lion because of this problem. Just went to the Apple store today as well with Lion installed on an external drive. Replicated the problem with Photobooth and the tech agreed to replace the logic board. However the turnaround time is 5-7 days; I'm leaving the country for a few months for work so 5-7 days is too long for me. Hopefully I can get the logic board replaced abroad.

For those of you that's already gotten a replacement logic board, has the problem completely gone away? Please let the rest of us know. Thanks!

    hjc218,

The issue completely went away after the logic board was replaced. I was fortunate in that I brought it in on Saturday and it was ready for pickup end-of-day on Sunday.

OK, guys, so here's my update:

After my MBP was equipped with a new logic board a couple of weeks ago, I startet getting the kernel panics. I checked my MBP in with the guys at the local Apple store a little more than a week ago and actually found a tech guy who KNEW about this problem.

Last Thursday, another tech called me and told me he won't repair my MBP on guarantee terms since there's obviously a liquid damage. I was shocked since this couldn't be true - my MBP was nowhere near any liquids nor in any damp rooms. He wouldn't argue with me, he told me either I pay or he's gonna check out my MBP and I can get a new appt if I want it repaired. No chance to take a look at it.

So I stormed into the Apple store and after some rather long discussions it turned out the liquid damage issue was ******** - probably residue from the first logic board repair (!!!).

So I had to wait another day to pick up the MBP. When I did, keyboard and trackpad wouldn't react. After a restart, it worked. But just until you send the MBP to sleep for more than half an hour - after waking it up again, nothing's working.

I phoned the guys at Apple care and they said since I have third-party RAM installed, they cannot exchange my MBP for a new one. This is what I wanted since I've been to the Apple store so many times by now it's ridiculous. OK - these problems started AFTER I got a new logic board, and I had the RAM installed long before ...

So the guy at Apple Care told me, if I can reproduce the error (hang-up keyboard and trackpad) with the original Apple RAM and if I can get a tech guy at Apple store to take a look at it, I'll receive a new MBP so I can finally get back to work again w/o all the hassle ...

Well: Late Sat afternoon the error happened again while the original Apple RAM was installed. I rushed into the Apple store and a tech guy took a look at it and noted it in my case #.

Today, I spoke to Apple Care again, this time another guy. He took a look at it and the way it seems, they want to blame it on my SSD / HDD in OptiBay instead of DVD combo. This is RIDICULOUS since I've had that combo up and running long before the problems started. And the problems started with each new repair ...

I'll have to wait till Wednesday now until they tell me what they'll do. Unbelievable. I mean - the guy at Apple Care on Saturday already promised they'll exchange my MBP as soon as the problem appears with the original RAM. How can they bring up new issues now? Come on, Apple ... you tell people you have the "better service".

BTW: No more Kernel Panics with the new Logic Board...

I have 8 Gb 3rd party RAM and the optic bay dock with a 2nd hard drive, and an SSD that replaces the original system disk.

I'm very wary to bring my machine into a shop, fearing that all the kernel panics will be blamed on the added hardware. For now, going back to 10.6.7 has addressed the NVRM problems.

An ever-growing part of me is missing my PC desktop, which I've replaced with the macbook pro, for which I could walk into a store, buy the broken part and change it myself. It has put into stark contrast how as a notebook owner (mac or PC), I am dependent on other people, who I would normally never depend on (front-line technicians).

    Hey Martin,

you're so right! Theoretically, the problems COULD stem from replacing the original HDD, putting in an OptiBay HDD instead of the DVD, and of RAM. But, ....

... in my case, I had my system up and running for a good, long time with the 3rd party RAM, OptiBay and SSD. No problems whatsoever, except for gfx problems every 2-3 weeks which I had from the very start. The real problems started with the first exchange of the Logic Board: Kernel Panics. And now, after the second exchange: No more Kernel Panics, but regular hang ups. Now: Only a truly insane person can blame this on the parts that worked well from the start and NOT on the repair work / new logic board.

And: How mean is THAT, making me reinstall the original RAM, having me run to the Apple store again, and when I did all of that - THEN telling me: Sorry, but we've found another loophole not to take responsibility?

I really hope Apple will come to satisfactory conclusion on Wednesday. They already PROMISED me they would exchange my machine, but obiously, I have nothing in writing. I'm sick and tired of all of this trouble ...

I experienced the same kernel panic about three times per day while I had the Apple MO-HD in the machine. I installed an SSD and wiped the machine clean. The behavior continued. Apple will not do anything unless they can reproduce it. Has anyone written an Automator script to reproduce the behavior?

I was able to reliably reproduce the black screen NVRM kernel panic with the external monitor detached in Photo Booth by clicking on the second effects tab (in Lion) or the tab with sepia / black and white / glow / etc. You may or may not need to click around a bit. Reproduced successfully in 10.6.7, 10.6.8 and a fresh install of 10.7.

I just had someone in Apple technical confirm that this is a graphics driver bug and a fix is in the works. Has anyone tried 10.7.1? They insist it is not a hardware problem.

A graphics driver problem? Maybe, though it went away when my logic board was replaced on August 7th and I haven't had a panic since (me or the MBP).

I'm in the same boat with atleast 2 or 3 crashes (blank screen) every day and not able to work properly. In middle of presentations it happens and it is very idiotic. all pc users keep smiling at these new lion upgrade issues. Honestly i never had this in previos SL.

A visit to apple store and demonstration to the tech guys will help me in replacing the board ?? please let me know.
