I have a backup drive with 2 partitions. One partition is used for backing up my main drive with OS 10.3.9, the other is for my old OS 9.2. This 2nd partition is fragmented. When I try to optimize it with Disc Warrior for OS 9 I get the message "Disc cannot be rebuilt because this disc is shared with OSX". My question is how can I rebuild this partition? If I boot from the Disc Warrior cd I don't get the option of choosing the OS 9 program part of Disc Warrior. Can I just rebuild this partition booted in OS X Disc Warrior since it appears on the desk top?
Unfortunately, no. When Alsoft updated Disk Warrior to work with OS X, they left Disk Optimizer behind. It won't operate in OS X. You can rebuild the drive while booted into the OS X version of Disk Warrior, but not defragment it.
Kurt, since the partition I want to defrag (or optimize) has OS 9 on it would I be able to optimize it with Norton Utilities. I would boot with the Norton cd and choose the OS9 partition. I used Norton until I updated to OSX, but I still have OS9 on its own partition.Would this damage the partition with OSX on it? Also when I rebuild a disc which has 2 partitions am I rebuilding the entire disc or only the partition I choose on the desktop? If only the partition I choose, then I think Norton should work, yes or no?
Thanks
Norton will only defragment the partition you choose. DO NOT defragment the OS X partition with Norton. Also, do not run Disk Doctor on the OS X portion. Norton was never updated to understand the OS X disk and file structure. It has destroyed many drives that had no problems after indicating that it found errors and "fixed" them.
