iWeb future: Apple, do you want to ruin my digital life?

iWeb is an app and you can still continue to use it whether MobileMe is here or whatever happens with iCloud.

iWeb as an app does not depend on either MMe or iCloud. The two are separate.

Also, why not try reading all the other posts on the forum with regard to this same topic. Your 'new' topic post is just one of many on the forum. Try doing a forum search first or at least reading what has gone before!

They will disappear into the Cloud. Whoosh, Gone. Never to be seen again.

They will be gone, because as far as anyone knows iCloud will not really replace MobileMe in its entirety, as there will be no hosting facilities as far as we can tell, so you'll need to go out and find yourself another hosting service such as HostExcellence, GoDaddy etc., and upload your site there by using ftp. Your blog comments will disappear and visitors to your site will no longer be able to comment on your blog as this was an MMe only service, so you need to re-do your blog using another software such as WordPress or use another commenting system such as http://www.intensedebate.com.

Well, no, you don't need to start again.

The only thing that you might have to re-do is your blog, but you can keep your website as it is.

iWeb is an app and will still work whatever happens. You can keep your iWeb site but you just need to upload it to another host. That is all. You would only need to use WordPress for your blog and not your whole site.

You DO NOT need to start from scratch with building your site - not unless you want to. You can keep it in iWeb, but just upload it elsewhere.

Just a thought or two. I fully understand the reluctance to 'start from scratch'… I'm making that same decision. While it's true that iWeb is an App and can be used via FTP to publish anywhere… which is good, I don't see any good indication that iWeb is going to be around much longer. Perhaps, perhaps not. Apple certainly isn't keeping it current. So while 'starting from scratch' is a nightmare of a thought… I have decided, personally, to make the move and get it done.

Also… by moving away from iWeb just about anything I move to will allow me to 'save' a lot of work should yet even 'another' move be made necessary, unlike iWeb.

iWeb, the latest version iWeb 09 should still work with intel Macs so this means it should still work with Lion. If you still want to use it and it sometime may not work with Lion, then you don't have to update, simply stick with SnowLeopard so that you can continue to use the App.

It's not that, Ethnoid… for me it's a matter of preventive maintenance… I don't want to move and then find myself in this same position down the road. If iWeb is no longer supported you're using a product balancing precariously on the edge of a cliff. The reason iWeb got to where it is was through development and innovation… I don't want that to end, I dont' want to use a product in which it does end.

The Internet is moving quickly… we all know… how long until iWeb's output is no longer accepted? Never? Maybe… I dunno.

Anyway… read a few 'teasing' posts about an iPad version of iWeb.. if true… hey, maybe iWeb isn't pushing up daisies. I'm not without hope… just not waiting around in the dark. - JamesJM

JamesJM. I'm looking for an iWeb replacement as well just in case. What's the best (ready, easiest) web site development platform you've been able to find? I'm not above writing HTML if I have to, but I'd prefer not :-) What did you take the plunge and switch to?

Some say RapidWeaver or Sandvox, but they are not as flexible as iWeb and you can't start with blank pages you have to use a template.

Freeway Express/Pro is worth a lot and is more flexible and you can do more with it.

There are also CMS options such as WordPress, Drupal and Joomla, but you need a host to be able to install these.

There is then the ultimate - DreamWeaver.

Take a look at Roger Wilmut's Migrating from MobileMe for info on life after MobileMe. It's really not so dire.

The following is what we'll lose after MMe shuts down:

Also, the buttons in iWeb's popup slideshows will lose their images.

However, if you follow the directions in the following tutorial you can get them back: #26 - How to Modify iWeb So Popup Slideshows Will Work After MobileMe is Discontinued. And who knows, Apple may very well incorporate those image files into the application in an update prior to the demise of MMe.

Evan, I'm not the best person to ask that question… seems I prefer the 'less' popular applications. 🙂

Well, I did something very few others are going to do… I bought Sandvox, Rapidweaver, AND Freeway… I'm developing a website with each of them and eventually I may settle on one or just keep doing it the hard way. 🙂

Oh, I'm still using iWeb as well.

After a month of so the quickest, for me, is Sandvox. I also like where they seem to be 'headed'…. though small it's an active community and there seems to be a lot of development both from Sandvox itself and 3rd parties.

Now when I say 'quick' I mean that in two ways: Quick to get anything done but also quick in researching how to do something a little out of the ordinary. The answers seem to come quicker.

RapidWeaver has an add on for everything… very nice, but also very expensive. Not sure how Sandvox will compare in that regard as their 3rd party add ons are still being developed. I do not like the interface of RapidWeaver and it confuses me. When I get something wrong I have to spend a huge amount of time figuring out 'why'.

FreeWay seems the most powerful to me but, (and remember, I'm only referring to me and have no idea how others would perceive it), the learning curve is much higher… and while visually intuitive the menu structure was foreign to me.

In the end it's going to be, (no big surprise here), whatever works best for you. But at this moment I'd have to say I'm leaning Sandvox. - JamesJM
