At about 2:15 mst today I suddenly had no forward/back buttons on Safari. I restarted Sarai, restarted my computer, went to view and re-dragged the buttons to the toolbar even though it shows that they are there, and made sure all updates were done. Now what??? I am using history (and Firefox) to navigate about the interweb.

I did that (as mentioned above) and it didn't work. I just restored Safari from time machine of several days ago when I had forward/back buttons and the buttons are still missing as I write this reply so I think there is something wrong someplace else.
Situation resolved itself this am when I logged out of FB and was able to drag the buttons back into the toolbar. Restarting the computer didn't log me out. Somehow something was holding on to something it shouldn't have. Thanks everybody

Just go up to the "View" pull down menu, and go to Customize Toollbar.
There you find the back & forward buttons and lots of other stuff.
Drag the ones you want into your toolbar.
That's very strange.
Did you recently install another toolbar? One that claims to make browsing at a favorite site easier?
No new toolbars. I did have a Facebook event earlier today. I was looking for a badge for my blog and the page didn't load properly (window didn't open???) and then it left a large blank white square on my desktop. I had to force quit Safari and then restart. I don't know if it started right after that or not.
Just to be extra careful, can you check these files, and tell me if you find any?

Check Safari / Preferences - Extensions. If you have any installed, turn that off, quit then relaunch Safari. See if you back button returns.
If it's not an Extensions issue, try troubleshooting the Safari .plist file.
Quit Safari.
Go to ~/Library/Preferences and move the com.apple.Safari.plist file to the Desktop. Launch Safari.
From the menu bar click View / Customize Toolbar.
If you can reset the back/forward button, move that .plist file to the Trash.
~ (Tilde) represents your Home folder.
Enable guest logins and log in as Guest (no password needed.) Same problem?
Reboot in safe mode and log in to your account. Same problem?
Did that and put it all back because Safari wouldn't launch at all. No extensions added. Think I may have to go to the genius bar. I don't want to lose all my bookmarks by uninstalling Safari and reinstalling it. (although Firefox has them all now so presumably I can import them back) Pretty sure that I can't reverse sync from the iPhone or iPad.
You won't lose your Bookmarks from just reinstalling Safari. You don't need to uninstall it first.
You can save your Bookmarks to your Desktop. From the Safari menu bar click File / Export Bookmarks. Then if necessary, just to go the File menu and click Import Bookmarks.
Not sure if you can "reverse" sync your iOS devices though.
