I am working on my thesis and while working with three-component (ternary) systems I need to ploy them on ternary (triangle) graphs, I already have a program that is just for plotting ternary graphs but it would be more convenient if I can do it with numbers. Does anyone have a solution for that ?

Not supported.
Chart types supported in numbers are shown on the Charts menu. Ternary doesn't appear in the list.
Fortunately, you do have alternative software that does support this task.

Thanks I know what are the options with charts, I wanted to know if someone has written a script to do this as I have seen micros in excel which enables users to plot ternary graphs !!!
If you are talking about plotting points, not doing shading or contours, you can transform the ABC points into X-Y points for a scatter chart. The triangle can be created as a shape, the labels as text and the features of the chart (gridlines, axes, etc) hidden.
The formula for "X" is =IF(B="","",G/1.73205+2*D/1.73205).

The other option is a software called Grapher from the Golden Software. Unfortunately it does not have a OS version yet but if you have parallel's or BootCamp you can run it on windows (this is what I do). It provides various plotting option which one of them is the ternary plots. If you look for an accurate option Grapher is the solution!
There is also a built-in app for Mac OS X called "Grapher" in the Utilities folder you may find helpful as it can plot polar graphs:

A ternary graph is used to plot percentages of sand, silt and clay. I got this far with an image to go behind the graph:
I constructed an equilateral triangle because the triangle shape in Numbers is not truly equilateral.
If the X axis is to be Sand, we will need to reverse the values (100-Sand) to plot high values on the left.

Here is another option that uses a pie chart in the background with concentric circles on top to make a "grid", and finally a scatter chart on top where you can have multiple "axes":
This is dynamic in that as you add more Categories it exapands automatically. You can hide columns C thru G as they are work columns not something you want to see.

Last night I figured it out G is "B" and D is "A".
I didn't want to use other software because I wanted my graphs to be updated in real time as I entered the data and I also wanted a spreadsheet other people could look at when analyzing my data.
How do I plot a ternary graph with numbers ?
