Q: iTunes has stopped working

I have the most recent vers. of iTunes (10.3.1) and it was working fine yeterday. Today, I went to re-start downloading some video lectures from iTunes U and iTunes crashed. Now everytime I try and open it, I get the error message "iTunes has stopped working" and the only option I have is to close the program. I looked around the Apple suppport site and did everything they recommended. ie: Deleting Temp files, Rebuilding the library, opening a new library, creating a new user....nothing worked. So, I uninstalled iTunes, QT, Bonjour, etc, did a registry clean, re-booted and re-installed everything, ran the Apple Software Update. And nothing, I still can't open iTunes. Any other suggestions??? I am running Windows Vista 32-bit.

A BEX citing QuickTimePlayer.dll ... that suggests that another application has stashed old QuickTime componentry in your system files.

So just in case we'll go looking for older QuickTime componentry in the most common locations for it to be stashed.

First we'll need to change some view settings.

In your Start menu, open Computer.

In your Organise menu, select Folder Options.

In the View tab, make sure that "Show hidden files and folders" is selected, and Hide extensions for known file types is unchecked.

    Click OK.

Now in Computer, open your C:\ drive (or whichever drive you have your operating system installed on).

    Open the "Windows" folder.

If you have a 32-bit version of Windows, open the "System32" folder.

If you have a 64-bit version of Windows, open the "SysWOW64" folder.

What files and folders can you see in there with QuickTime in the title? (In a standard installation of Quicktime you should be seeing precisely two files... QuickTime.qts and QuickTimeVR.qtx ... and no QuickTime folders whatsoever.)

There are no QuickTime folders but I do have more than two files:

    quick.ime (may not be QuickTime)

    QuickTime.ax

    QuickTime.qts

    QuickTimeVR.qtx

    QuickTime.ax

... abrupt change of tack ...

I think that one is associated with the Cyberlink QuickTime Source Filter. If you uninstall that, do your iTunes and QuickTime Player start running again?

By "uninstall" do you mean "delete"?  Thanks again for your response!!!

Ummm ... I think it might be installed as a component of some other package. So preferably we'd install that other package. But if we aren't sure which package included the old QuickTime filter, let's try instead dragging the quicktime.ax out of your system files and onto the desktop. Do iTunes and the QuickTime player launch now for you?

I moved it and had the same issue.  I checked the programs and there was a "QuickTime Alternative."  I uninstalled that and all of the Quicktime files under System32 were removed.  I then went back and performed the "repair" on Quicktime and back to the same problem, but now the files you mentioned above still are not there.  But I'm getting the same iTunes stopped working and QuickTime.

My issue started when I was trying to add a movie and sync my iPad.  I'd also added a few songs before but have since removed them.  I'm scared to plug my iPad back in and test.

Ahhhh ... a really old version of QuickTime Alternative might well have done that.

Let's try uninstalling your existing QuickTime. Now download and install QuickTime from the following Apple Website. (Get the installer that doesn't mention iTunes ... the filename of the correct download should be QuickTimeInstaller.exe.)

    http://www.apple.com/quicktime/download/

Does the QuickTime reinstall go through okay? If so, try launching the Player and iTunes again. Any better luck now?

Hi, I seem to be having the same problem. Everytime i open iTunes, it just says "iTunes has stopped working" and the only thing i can do is close the application. I've tried uninstalling and re-installing iTunes, and also doing what you suggested for the others, but it's just not working, A little help?

    Fault Module Name:          iTunes.dll

    Fault Module Version:          10.2.1.1

iTunes.dll results there often seem to indicate a user-specific issue (in the sense defined in the following document). Unfortunately, it's difficult to get more specific than that with them.

So I'd try steadily proceeding as per the instructions from the following document. (First checking to see if it's a user-specific or systemwide issue, and then proceeding with the troubleshooting measures from the appropriate section of the document.)
