Q: iTunes has stopped working

I have the most recent vers. of iTunes (10.3.1) and it was working fine yeterday. Today, I went to re-start downloading some video lectures from iTunes U and iTunes crashed. Now everytime I try and open it, I get the error message "iTunes has stopped working" and the only option I have is to close the program. I looked around the Apple suppport site and did everything they recommended. ie: Deleting Temp files, Rebuilding the library, opening a new library, creating a new user....nothing worked. So, I uninstalled iTunes, QT, Bonjour, etc, did a registry clean, re-booted and re-installed everything, ran the Apple Software Update. And nothing, I still can't open iTunes. Any other suggestions??? I am running Windows Vista 32-bit.

How did you re-install 10.3.1.55?  Did you have to un-install 10.4?  Did you lose anything?

Wow, this seems to be an epidemic!  Hope someone can give me some guidance, I've tried pretty much everything I can find on here.  It started doing this when I was adding new music, and now is doing it when photos are being "optimized".  Here is a report. Thanks!

    Hi B Noir

I could use your help please to get my iPad back on track for the kids. Like TheMatrixPL and Malloree about, I have a BEX event but mine seems to be related to Quicktime whereas theirs says APPCRASH. My fault report is below and the problems began at the same time as the Windows Update. Perhaps that is coincidntal  but I was and still am unable to backup my iPad and now after removing and reapplying iTunes, I get the 'iTunes has stopped working' message. I was able to open iTunes on the same PC but under a diffrent user name.

I hope you can spare a moment? Thanks. TCS.

For the past several weeks I've constantly had the APPCRASH problem event above. It seemed to happen everytime podcasts were being downloaded, so I was able to sync my ipad/iphone when I disconnected from the internet.  After reading this whole thread I deleted everything in the download directory (at this point I'm reconnected to the internet) then did a refresh on my podcasts in itunes.  A few podcasts were downloaded then sure enough I got the same itunes has stopped working message. When I looked at the download directory there was one folder/file for an etsy podcast.  It looked as if the video was complete although not renamed and put in its proper place yet.  I could play the video in Quicktime no problem, so I started up itunes again and this time tried to "add file to library" from the file menu.  It was added ok, then I tried to change the media kind (get info, options tab) to podcast and save it.  At this point itunes crashed again. So there was something about that podcast that crashed itunes when it tried to write the metadata to the file.  I deleted the problematic podcast so that itunes wouldn't attempt to download it again, and I haven't has an "itunes has stopped working" since.

However, I have been updating my podcasts while writing this and the lastest etsy podcast seems to have a similar problem - no message this time and it appears that the file has downloaded (from the downloads directory I can play it in quicktime), but it has not been added to the podcast list and the top message bar says "Downloading one item". The Downloads area indicates 1, but when I open it up there isn't anything there.

I've "reported a concern" via itunes about these podcasts but I don't know who the concern will go to or indeed if the problem lies with Etsy or Apple. Regardless, iTunes shouldn't crash if it has a problem doing the last administrative bit of a podcast download.

For the time being I will continue to monitor my etsy podcasts and try to download them occasionally/manually but not while I'm syncing.  Thought maybe this might help others of you with the APPCRASH problem.

Today I routinely installed a quicktime update, but that update failed (with a Windows Vista error that I had insufficient privileges or somesuch). Immediately after, Itunes repeatedly crashed during cd rips.

I uninstalled Quicktime, and now ITunes is working fine. I guess I'll find out if there is a problem next time I need to do something using Quicktime.
