iPad dropped, now with red screen/background

I've had the original iPad for several months now, and it has been working fine. However, yesterday, the iPad was dropped (a couple of inches from the ground), and now the background screen is red. You can still see the icons and the iPad remains fully functional, except for the red discoloration in the background. For example, when you play a video, the letterbox is now red instead of black.

Has anyone experienced this before? I've synced it, but no effect. Don't want to try a full restore unless it's absolutely necessary. I've read on the net that it may be corrected over time?

Thanks in advance.

Thank you !!!! I was so very upset to find the red screen afte a minor drop. Couldn't believe the screen was messed up with such alittle bump!!! I even tried to slap the back figuring it couldnt get any worse, but no sucess.....one of the posts mentioned a drop flat to the floor from 18". I wasnt that brave, but a second drop from 6" off the hardwood flat to the floor straighted me out.! Wont have to make an insurance claim now...thanks again for posting!

After having been advised by support staff at a local Apple store to just have the unit replaced, I decided to tap the back of my iPad out of frustration. It wasn't a light tap, but not a forceful one either. After several taps, the display normalized. Hard to believe, but it worked and now my iPad display has no signs of discoloration. It appears that dropping the iPad may have loosened or messed up something inside, which was somehow corrected by tapping the back of the iPad.

I'll be interested to know if this remedy works for your iPad.

Thanks! ... i was freaking out when I looked my screen all red. Turned off and on inmediatly and or course did not work. So I found this post and like they said just two slap not too strong not too gentle and it was fine again. I wonder if any have had any problem after the slap the back technique.

So far everything is allright

I was skeptic at first.

But then i tried it following the KortP's instructions on where specifically to tap the pad.

And now my iPad is working. Incredible.

This reminds me of the Dell Dimension fix for some of their desktops before.

The 2 inch drop.

Just had the samer issue and banging the back worked!!! I noticed that the spot that made it work was to the left of the home button (when looking from screen side) and up about 1-2 inches from the bottom and 1 inch in from the side.

Unbelievable. Im tempted to pop it open to see if thats where the video chip is or maybe a ribbon cable.

Try this - Reset the iPad by holding down on the Sleep and Home buttons at the same time for about 10-15 seconds until the Apple Logo appears - ignore the red slider - let go of the buttons. (This is equivalent to rebooting your computer.) No data/files will be erased. http://support.apple.com/kb/ht1430

Some iPad users have been able to revive their dropped iPad. Turn the iPad over and give it a HARD SLAP on the back. May take several slaps.

OMG!!! I just about died when my ipad 2 just tipped over onto a pillow and the color went all red!!! You were the only one who was able to give me some sort of solution other then take it into Apple and hope for the best. THANK YOU SO MUCH! You wouldnt think that hitting your ipad would fix it. I guess it keeps down on maintenance costs. lol. I dont reccommend hitting it too hard. Took me about 10 firm but not too hard, kinda like a light spankin'. hahaha. It messed it up more on like the 9th spanking but then on the 10th brought her back to life! This should not be like this with such an expensive piece of equipment. I really want Apple to come out and say officially that "to fix this issue please spank the back of your ipad about 10 times." lol
