Yep, MacKeeper is totally a legit app - visit its official website mackeeper.com to make sure in it. Besides, there are communities of the users of MacKeeper on Facebook and Twitter - so you can contact real people and ask them about their own experience with MacKeeper. Don't worry about leroydouglas's comment - take a look at this article from pcfixessupport.com (it tells how to remove the fake Mac Keeper - Mac Defender analogue that has nothing in common with the original app) - http://bit.ly/izdaxG

So MacKeeper offers 15 days full-functional trial that gives you an opportunity to test all the tools the app offers. And you'll be able to make sure MacKeeper works as advertised.

The MacDefender initial site attempts to convince you to download their trojan has been known to display "MacKeeper 911", so make certain you are on it's official web site before you agree to download anything. That site is http://mackeeper.zeobit.com/.

Depending on where you see it, it may not be malware, but it's not really legit either. The company uses very shady marketing practices, such as pop-under ads and stealing a .org version of a competing product's web site to market MacKeeper. (The clamxav.com site is legit, but clamxav.org is a "review" of ClamXav with a download link that sends you to the MacKeeper site.) There's nothing MacKeeper does that can't be done better by some other product, either for free or sold by an ethical company.

How about the great big green Download Now button at the bottom of the "review" of ClamXav? How about the fact that the clamxav.org domain is owned by your company and not by the folks who are in charge of ClamXav? This is quite clearly dishonest, and darn close to fraud IMHO. Surely you're not going to try to justify those things? There's only one honest thing your company could do here: release the clamxav.org domain.

BTW, to others, note that Sana Paul's job at ZeoBit appears to be running around the web trying to put out "fires" like this one. Anything he has to say should be considered very biased.

No, it's malware!

To Completely Uninstall and Remove Zeobit's MacKeeper

Download and Install AppCleaner

Download and Install Find Any File

Run AppCleaner

  1. Click on Applications
  2. Select MacKeeper
  3. Click on Search
  4. Select all results
  5. Click on Delete

Run Find Any File

  1. Search for zeobit
  2. Select and Delete all results (except for those already in the Trash)
  3. Search for mackeeper
  4. Select and Delete all results (except for those already in the Trash)

Open Up Keychain Access

  1. Search for zeobit
  2. Select and Delete all results
  3. Search for mackeeper
  4. Select and Delete all results

Secure Empty Trash

Reboot

Unless you perform all of these steps, you'll have remnants of Zeobit's MacKeeper app. I had installed MacKeeper several weeks ago, when I had accidentally deleted some files on my Mac -- hoping to use their "undelete" feature. This was when my nightmare began. Even after using AppCleaner to remove it, there were still some background processes that were running every 10 seconds. While probably harmless, this adds unnnecessary strain on the Mac.

The key was also using Find Any File and delete any entries in the Keychain Access.

I hope this helps! 🙂
