Email and attaching jpeg images....file size

When I attach a jpeg picture from Aperture the original file size can be 10 mb or more. The file that actually is sent via Apple Mail is barely 250 kb. How can I get Email to send the actual size? I do chose the actual picture size option in the lower right hand corner. I have tried dragging jpegs to mail and using the attach paper clip option. I am not getting the full resolution of the jpeg file I want to send.

If I send the exact same file via gmail over the web, it is 10 Mb or more.

Unfortunately, I have selected exactly the preference you recommend. The file that gets attached and actually sent via Apple Email is still a very small file....250 kb or so. As I noted, when I attach the exact same file via gmail on the web, it is 10 mb or so. It's Apple's email app that is somehow really reducing the file size.

Thanks, but that is usually the way I do it. The file saved to the desktop is 10 mb, the file that is sent is 250kb. When I attach the same 10mb in gmail via the web, it is sent as a 10 mb file. This is what is confusing and annoying.

P.S. I have also tried to do it directly from Aperture 3 with Option > E and also by using the Photo Browser in Apple's Email all with the same results.

What kind of e-mail account is this? IMAP? Exchange? Is the the same Gmail account?

On my first effort, my file was 10.3 MB and I had a red message at the bottom of my window saying the maximum message size was 10 MB. It refused to send at all. Depending on your e-mail server, it may automatically detect a smaller size and force an adjustment. I was using my local e-mail server. If you are using some real server, with Exchange or something, it could very well be smarter than that and automatically "fix it" for you. There is no built-in limitation in Apple Mail. It must be something the server is telling Mail to do.

The sending server is still SMTP. I have heard that Google now has Exchange support so I thought that might be an issue. I think Google is still the problem.

By the way, how do you know the file that is sent is 250 Kb? Maybe Google is resizing it for you. If you want, you can send one of these to me at info at etresoft dot com.

I determined the file size by downloading the image from the email back to my desktop and looking at the file size info with Get Info. Also, the attached file data showing up in the email tells you the file size. Something is resizing it. As I noted, when I attach the jpeg directly into Gmail using gmail via Safari, it is the actual file size. So in this case gmail is not resizing the image. It's only when I am using Mac Email app that this is happening.

Hi,

I was having the exact same problem. I tried many difference solutions I found in different fourms and tested them by sending emails with jpeg attatchments to myself. The solution I found worked for me was simply selecting actual size from the menu in the right hand corner. However, I am now running Lion. When I did this in snow lepard it made no difference? All a bit strange but just relieved it is working now 😀
