iPod nano (6th generation) question

Do I need the physical Nike attachment to use Nike app when running? Because my Griffin Slap for iPod nano (6th Gen.)

watch band, that I bought at the Apple store doesn't allow for the Nike attachment to physically attach. There is no space for it. So can I somehow just install the Nike+ app like I did on my iPhone?
