HTML5 Problems

HTML5 is EVIL!

I need help blocking HTML5. Whenever I log on to my Mac, Safari automatically opens (it's NOT configured to do so) and I the following message pops up:

The website “http://download.cnet.com” is requesting 1 MB of disk space to store “html5 test db” as a database on your disk.

I click NO and then an application that I do not want automatically downloads.

How do I stop the garbage HTML5 from taking control of my machine?

Flash never caused me problems like this.

iPod classic, Mac OS X (10.6.7), iPad-1 IOS 4.3.3

Since the HTML5 database request is coming from http://download.cnet.com you should take it up with them.

Database storage settings are in the Security tab of Safari's preferences.

HTML5 does not "control" anything outside of the web-page you are browsing. The database is to speed up subsequent visits and is controlled by the website developer.

Mine is configured for "None."

The website developer couldn't Shanghai my computer with Flash. HTML5 made it possible.

Oh dear... you might want to read up on that. Flash is known to be one of the primary ways your computer can be taken over remotely.

Just a few short months ago Adobe had to fix this:

http://www.adobe.com/support/security/advisories/apsa11-01.html

"This vulnerability (CVE-2011-0609) could cause a crash and potentially allow an attacker to take control of the affected system. There are reports that this vulnerability is being exploited in the wild in targeted attacks via a Flash (.swf) file ..."

Your computer, along with every single other computer on the planet with Flash installed was vulnerable to being "shanghai'd" for over a week, while everyone just had to wait, finger crossed while Adobe fixed it.

And they've just admitted to yet another critical vulnerability today:

http://www.adobe.com/support/security/bulletins/apsb11-18.html

"This memory corruption vulnerability (CVE-2011-2110) could cause a crash and potentially allow an attacker to take control of the affected system. There are reports that this vulnerability is being exploited in the wild in targeted attacks via malicious Web pages."

Are you still so naive to think a website developer can't take over your computer because of Flash?
