That's an interesting dilemma. Without the iPhone, you can't open the backup. And you are correct, only apps and selected music/pictures/videos will sync over to iPad initially. Did you ever back your contacts up to your computer when you synced your iPhone. The options are to sync them with Yahoo, Google or Windows. If you did that, then you can sync your contacts back to iPad via iTunes. If you did not, you may be out of luck, unless you decide to buy another iPhone and set it up from your iPhone backup already in your iTunes backups.

Hmm thanks for the info. It's just really weird that itdfoesnt work because I was told differently when I made the purchase at the apple store. That's mainly the reason why I bought an iPad.

I guess I'll have to get and iPhone.. Do you know if I can get the info back using my friends latest generation iPod touch? Or just iPhone hardware?

That's not completely true. He can certainly set up his iPad from his iPhone backup. He is just correct that his contacts and notes will not automatically come over. I originally set up my iPad from my iPhone 4 backup. I also have mobileme, so getting my contacts over was a snap. Even if he doesn't have mobileme, if he had synced his contacts with what I wrote above, he could easily move them to his iPad. If he didn't, he will likely need a new iPhone and set it up from his backup, sync his contacts to his computer and then from iTunes he can then direct them from where he synced them on his computer directly to his iPad.

How would your friends iPod touch help you? It likely doesn't hold your contacts, does it? Unless someone else has a better suggestion, and if you didn't sync your contacts to your computer as is permitted in iTunes, I think the only option is to get another iPhone for yoursel (Happy Birthdat to yourself) and set up the iPhone from your backup (you did back up your iPhone, didn't you?) and then sync contacts.

If your main computer is portable, you might see if it is feasible to have the Apple Store Genius recreate you original iPhone and back it up in such a way that you can load everything to the iPad.

Just curious, do you have something else that will give you the phone specific functions? I would not have thought the iPad would be a good replacement for an iPhone.

The Touch does have a Contacts app but it seems like contacts are more central to the iPhone design than the Touch and therefore might be treated differently. It is almost beyond me why the store will not assist you especially after you have purchased a device per their recommendation. If you are in the US, you might try calling Apple directly and getting a second opinion.

Has your friend wiped and restored their iPod Touch before?
