I know I have my Google calendar set up, for the most part, like it should be because everything else on my Google calendar syncs up but when I look for a task item, nothing appears. Is there a way to get the tasks to sync just like an appointment does without using a third party software program or Mobile Me?
No it doesn't.
There are a number of apps in the app store that will integrate with Google Tasks. Many of them free. There are also a number of free and paid apps that will sync with services like Toodledo. The free version of the Toodledo service is much more powerful than Google tasks at the moment. It supports repeating events, multiple reminders, etc.
You might want to take a look at those while we wait for the new talk manager in iOS 5.
