Youtube loads very slowly in Safari and Firefox, fast in Chrome

Cross-posted this on Macrumors:

Could anyone help me please? Safari's been acting weird for a little while now and I'm not sure the cause. Navigating to Youtube doesn't render thumbnails promptly, videos don't start downloading until a minute after the page has rendered (it's not slow, as when the videos start downloading they go by quick) and iStat shows no incoming data for that period of time.

Observations

1.) Initially when the problem occurred, Google Chrome would load the video immediately, but without any preloading.

2.) I thought it might have something to do with my wireless network. I switched from an 802.1x encrypted WiFi network to an unencrypted network.

3.) I'm not sure if it was the switch, a fluke, something with the program, but the first video worked normally in Safari. Then the issue began to reoccur.

4.) I've uninstalled flash, downgraded flash, reupgraded flash, and noted that the issues with Youtube occurred irregardless of the versions of Flash.

5.) HTML5 playback on Youtube worked even worse than flash playback. The videos didn't start downloading at all until minutes after the page had loaded.

6.) Click-2-Flash showed the same behavior as HTML5 playback on Youtube. Videos either didn't load at all or took minutes to start downloading.

7.) Mozilla Firefox exhibits the same behavior as Safari if not worse behavior.

8.) No errors appear in Console so I can't really narrow down an error.

9.) Google Chrome does now preload videos. Safari still operates terribly.

10.) Any network changes I make appear to work very briefly. Using a proxy worked for a very short time, about the same period of time switching from an 802.1x encrypted network to an open network lasted.

11.) I'm not sure why I'm having issues with Safari. Not all of the thumbnails render completely in Google Chrome either. But as soon as I start scrolling the page, they appear.

I have done numerous resets, deleted plist files, consulted higher powers, considered going voldemort on google's servers, consulted higher powers about striking youtube down, etc, alas with no resolution in sight.

Any help would be very much appreciated.

Deleted flash cookies, no effect.

Created a new user account. Load one video in Youtube and the problem doesn't occur. Any subsequent videos cause the issue to occur. I've turned off in Flash the storing of flash cookies.

Disk Utility was used. An error was found in directory. Correction of error showed no impact on issue.

I did notice an error occur after logging back into my main account in Console related to com.apple.kextd at the exact same time I launch Safari. Someone said

Using "sudo chown root:admin /" seems to have a noticeable effect, the first video youtube loads is flawless. Immediately after the thing goes to **** until I run that command in Terminal again.

What could kextd have to do with Safari and Youtube working well together though?
