Audio Midi Setup can't see my interface

I have a Midiman/M-Audio MidiSport 2x2 connected to my G4. I was running Reason 2 and got 2.5 not long ago. I was able to get the AMS to see the interface and run 2.5 in OSX mode. Here lately, my app hasn't been seeing a midi device. I check the prefs and it says that there's a midisport 2x2 connected but reason doesn't respond to keyboard.

I checked AMS and it shows the interface icon lit up and the divice "is online" but when I run the scan, it greys out and get infor says that it's "offline".

Anyone have a solution to this?

Aaarrgghhh.... I had typed half a page ranting about the horrible, despicable, piece of junk, worst garbage I ever bought, pathetic Digidesign MBox when Safari went down, so, you were spared most of that. In the interest of time (in case this safari install crashes again), see if you happened to have installed anything from Digidesign e.g. CoreAudio driver. I did install the latest driver for my MIDIMAN 4x4 USB interface. Get it from their web site and then see if that helps.

http://www.m-audio.com/index.php?do=support.drivers&k=driver&s=4&p=a4fc99df673e5 4ff97ce399bbbfdef71&o=MacOS+10.4.4+-+PowerPC%28G3-G4-G5%29&f=564

Still, I was constantly getting this error that the MIDI server could not be found in Audio MIDI set up but as soon as I UNinstalled everything from the Digidesign installer, everything in MIDI showed up beautifully. Avoid buying MBox, even if I am the one trying to sell an almost brand new unused much hated like-new one.

Audio MIDI Setup was unable to launch the MIDI Server. This means that you will be unable to view or edit your MIDI configurations.

Improperly written MIDI drivers can prevent the MIDI Server from launching successfully. If you have recently installed a new MIDI driver, try uninstalling it and then relaunching Audio MIDI Setup. If Audio MIDI Setup works correctly after that, then please contact the driver's manufacturer for further support.

Hi Nathan, It is connected directly to the eMac. Only other thing is a keyboard (Apple). I have the same problem whether I have the M-Audio MIDI interface connected or not. MBox *****, it is a piece of unreliable garbage. For those that it works for it is usable, (but even when it did work for me {on limited apps} in older OS', it would almost blow my speakers if the eMac had a crash or rebooted, would always need to be manually switched to Line In from the front panel.

For those that have working MBox, enjoy. For those that even THINK about buying Digidesign MBox, run as fast as you can.

Hi Justin, The problem existed without a MIDI interface. The problem continued after I installed the new M-Audio driver. The MIDI interface is working fine with Tiger, the MBox was not working before, not working now. It breaks the MIDI as soon as CoreAudio is installed. MIDI works fine again as soon as CoreAudio from Digidesign is purged and the eMac is happy again.

Justin, HUH?

What "as everybody has been telling you" are you talking about?

What Digidesign MIDI driver are you referring to? I do not have a Digidesign MIDI box, so what driver?

As far as I can tell, CoreAudio7 was installed on my machine from Digidesign for MBox so that should be a good combo not a bad one.

Since it is so finicky, I am sharing my experience with fellow Mac users who may either be able to suggest a real and useful/useable solution or at least be warned not to invest in MBox devices.

That is the question I am asking, Justin. Who is "everybody" who has been telling me how poor the MBox driver is? I checked the thread and do not see anyone telling me anything about an MBox driver. Is there some other thread you are referring to?

I am glad to know of your experience with DigiPoorDesign. 🙂 Could you let me know where/how to uninstall their MIDI drivers? Thanks.

Alright, your confusion stems from me thinking you were the original poster having issues and somebody else (who happened to be you) had told you that the drivers aren't great. So only schizophrenics could be anything BUT confused. Hope that clears things up, I honestly wasn't trying to confuse.

You can find the driver at:

/Library/Audio/MIDI Drivers

If you have one there you can remove it, restart, test things out. In Logic Pro (my turf) doing so has resolved many issues. Do not trash it immediately as you may need it, so just put it away.

Phew! Thanks, Justin. 🙂 OK, I will check out the location you mention for evil Digidesign gremlins. I want to use my Logic Express 7 that is sitting unused since I got it and then even paid for the upgrade. (I am singlehandedly keeping some Mac software companies alive by buying software I have no chance {or talent 😉 } for using). 🙂

Thanks, Justin. I will try that. Regarding the kind of music I make, well, I have 7 birds at home. I put some bird seed on the music keyboard, leave the house for lunch, and the recorded output of their random pressing on my music hot keys makes the music... "When Doves Fry?" 🙂

But, seriously, I would be happy to mail you latest CD proof of lack of talent. Email me your address from my web site http://imran.TV . Heck, I will even autograph it, but you have to share the wealth 50-50 when you sell it for something serious on eBay 5-10 years from now. 🙂
