Attach iPod to computer > launch iTunes. Be sure that "Manually manage music" is selected in Options. This is so that, once the files are deleted, the iPod will not be automatically synced and present you with the same problem:
Look at the list of songs in your Ipod (not in the iTunes listing!):
Select the songs to delete by highlighting (single click) then press "Delete" or Control + click [or right click] and select "Delete" from the contextual menu.

Instead of deleting songs try converting them to a higher bit Rate by checking the option under your iPod nano menu this will free up alot of space on your iPod without deleting songs
I don't ever sync my whole library. I just sync playlists, and if i don't won't a song then i just delete the song from the playlist and resync!

Converting to a higher (eg: 64K to 128K) bitrate will make the files larger, that will not free up any space, quite the opposite in fact!
I have a shuffle. I could not figure out how to free up space even though I deleted tracks from various playlists and emptied the trash. Turns out they have to be deleted under the main trunk heading "music," not from the playlists themselves.
How do i get to Options?
When your ipod is connected to itunes you should see those options in the summary tab under your ipod!
