MacKeeper can't be deleted!!!

Hi MadMacs0 appreciate the information, so I assume that using OSX v10.6.8 or 10.7 will resolve this issue.

My real concern is to find hidden elements within the system when MacKeeper was installed, that were left after the uninstalled, that don't have Zoebit or MacKeeper included in their names. All such named files with MAcKeeper or Zoebit are now I believe no longer on my computer.

Yes, I was a bit confused when I posted that. After I went to the Apple download site it said it was for Mac OS X 1.5 through 10.5.8 and above, but the only one offered was for Leopard. I don't know whether that meant it was already included in SL and Lion or perhaps it's been integrated into a soon to be released update.

I know you still believe that, but I don't. If I use a browser that doesn't have all the adblock plugins/extensions I can see what I think are the same ads and I never installed MacKeeper. I still think your computer is fine and the problem is with the web sites.

When I look to the same sites using http:// on a different computer the embeded adverts of MacKeeper are not present; when I visit the same sites using the computer MacKeeper had been installed on the adverts appear if using http: in Safari only. Therefore Safari must be accessing some element that is causing it to show the MacKeeper adverts. Safari has either been modified to access the adverts then place them into the same space that legitimate adverts take up (legitimate adverts can be seen using Firefox - thanks to WZZZ) and with https or a proxy server in Safari. I am keen to find out how they hack the embedded adverts into famous company sites. Zoebit haven't answered any e-mails since I insisted they disclose what is still on the system, not even to say nothing remains - which I find interesting. I would like to get to the bottom of this in order to share with others who may not realize the intrusion into their system.

I have only a limited understanding of how advertising on the net works. But the answer may be third party ad servers over which the main domain may have only limited control. And for a stream of income, I would suppose these otherwise reputable "famous company sites" may allow the package these third party ad servers deliver. In other words, these ads may not be "hacked" into the site.

I did take a look at Safari and somehow the Zoebit cookie has turned up in the cookies again. I have deleted it, but I am sure it will resurface. It is this regeneration of the cookies that makes me believe that there are still intrusive elements of Zoebit.com within my system.

If you removed all cookies prior to closing Safari, was it only the zeobit cookie that reappeared?

Hi WZZZ, About 3 return, always the same. I am curious what is generating these as it indicates teh system is not clean. I think Zoebit have a lot to answer for.

If the same three keep reappearing, while all the others stay deleted -- I'm assuming you mean two others besides the zeobit one -- there has to be some explanation, somehow, for that behavior. Since it appears to be a Safari issue, why don't you ask in the Safari forum. Maybe someone will have an idea. I know Safari reappearing cookies was an issue a while ago and maybe someone's figured it out now. Or, maybe, this is different, but you might get some help over there. Tell them your OS and Safari version.

You did check your Flash cookies (Local Shared Objects) in ~(your user) Library/Preferences/Macromedia?

According to this, if it's set by an LSO, it will appear in all browsers, which would mean Firefox, as well. I have no idea if evercookies are actually being employed by anyone, though. Since it works through JavaScript, NoScript should block it, as long as the site where it's being generated is not "allowed."

Does this work cross-browser?

If a user gets cookied on one browser and switches to another browser,

as long as they still have the Local Shared Object cookie, the cookie

will reproduce in both browsers.

Look for the LSO in ~ (your user) Library/Preferences/Macromedia

The 3 cookies including the zoebit.com one are only appearing in Safari. I just did a full clean up with OnyX and the zoebit.com cookie and its two friends were still there after reboot and restart of Safari. The Privacy setting in Firefox is set to Never Remember History; if setting to remember then checking cookies non are present.

Thank you for the idea to check teh Safari formum to see if anyone has ideas there about what is causing this.

AT -User/Library/Preferences/Macromedia I found airappinstaller. Also Library/Preferences/Macromedia/#SharedObjects/H8HTT3WY/Skype but that was about all that was visible there.

To Completely Uninstall and Remove Zeobit's MacKeeper

Download and Install AppCleaner

Download and Install Find Any File

Run AppCleaner

1. Click on Applications
2. Select MacKeeper
3. Click on Search
4. Select all results
5. Click on Delete

Run Find Any File

1. Search for zeobit
2. Select and Delete all results (except for those already in the Trash)
3. Search for mackeeper
4. Select and Delete all results (except for those already in the Trash)

Open Up Keychain Access

1. Search for zeobit
   
2. Select and Delete all results
3. Search for mackeeper
4. Select and Delete all results

Secure Empty Trash

Reboot

Unless you perform all of these steps, you'll have remnants of Zeobit's MacKeeper app. I had installed MacKeeper several weeks ago, when I had accidentally deleted some files on my Mac -- hoping to use their "undelete" feature. This was when my nightmare began. Even after using AppCleaner to remove it, there were still some background processes that were running every 10 seconds. While probably harmless, this adds unnnecessary strain on the Mac.

The key was also using Find Any File and delete any entries in the Keychain Access.

• After I put MacKeeper in the Trash bin, the Uninstall MacKeeper window popped up. It requested the reasons for uninstalling and requested me to click the button, but the button does not work. I cannot get rid of the Uninstall MacKeeper pop-up box and it sits on the screen in front of all the other windows, blocking the view or icons! I had to put it in the corner.
• Also, the pop-up box requests that I will be asked for my password.
• I was able to click on my Trash anyway and empty it. Now, I'm afraid to reboot or use Safari.

Any ideas on how to get rid of any remnants of MacKeeper and restore my MBP? I think I was recommended to this product from an Apple community response! I've been trying to clean up my HDD and create more space before installing a new internal HDD.

I guess I'll need to reset the browser (not Safari) that I was had on when I was using MacKeeper. I deleted it from Keychain. Anything else I need to do?

The procedure seems to be working for most users, so I'm not sure what the problem was. It's OK to give your password as it goes to OS X not to MacKeeper, but you seem to be beyond that now.

I can't imagine anybody in the ASC recommending it. There are only a handfull that even like it.

Thanks! The article really helped, particularly when I used the Activity Monitor to make it quit! That made the box disappear. The only thing left is to delete MacKeeper from my backups. I'm using a new LaCie external HDD. I was unable to use Time Machine as instructed. I have 10.6 now but will upgrade to 10.6.8 soon.

Killing anything from Activity Monitor will only be temporary until the next boot. If you want to get every piece of MacKeeper code, get EasyFind, set to scan all files, search all files and folders, invisible, case insensitve and enter both "zeobit" and "mackeeper." Or use EF after doing everything you can with the applehelpwriter link.

From EF, you can use Destroy or Move to Trash, but if your password is required to authenticate you must instead use Reveal in Finder and then Move to Trash from there, after giving your admin pword.

This should be a thorough way of getting everything. Oh, and look for "wine." Use of wine was supposed to have been discontinued, but maybe you have a version that still uses it.
