firmware file is not compatible

Recently, my iPod touch decided that the security code I entered to lock the device was wrong and I cannot unlock it. I decided to wipe it and restore in iTunes.

I'm trying to restore my 2g iPod touch 8GB iOS 4.2.1 and when I try to restore through iTunes, I get "The iPod "Scott's iPod could not be restored because the firmware file is not compatible." error message. (??????)

I cannot wipe the iPod or unlock it. It's never been jailbroken or anything like that. I decided to passcode it after my wife's iPod was stolen.

I would delete the firmware file and redownload the file. On a Mac tht file is located in User>Library>iTunes>iPod Software Updates

Yeah that's what I tried. The re-downloaded file did the same thing.

Ultimately, I ended up using my Mom's iBook G4 with iTunes 10.2 to restore and re-download the 4.2.1 update, then re-sync it to mine.

I guess the lesson here is be very sure of what you enter as a passcode. it's easy to make a mistake using a touch screen.
