Not shutting down, blue screen hangs indefinitely

It seems like a persistent problem, has happened for the last 5 times I tried to shut down, I tried waiting for half an hour but the blue screen woudn't go, I end up having to hold the power button to switch it off. I even tried resetting by holding cmd+alt+P+R but that didn't solve the problem. Any other ideas?

Thanks.

Ok I just tried repairing partitions from CD, but still hangs on shut down ... are you sure it's a partition problem? This started happening after I ejected a USB modem, which seemed to have ejected successfully but not completely as the folder was stilll browsable in Finder after ejecting, and then Finder hanged and I had to force quit Finder ... then this shutting down problem started. Any other ideas?

Thanks.

See what messages there are in Console (in Utilities.) Open it up and go to system.log from where you see shutdown/"halt." Post them here. Also, try a Safe Boot: hold Shift key down at startup. Give it more time to boot than usual. Then try shutting down from Safe Boot.

Create a new user admin account and test for this behavior from there.

I stopped using the modem before this started happening, and now it's uninstalled, so I don't it's it. The hang happens on and off, sometimes it shuts down sometimes it doesn't, most of the time it doesn't, I can't put a finger on what's causing it.

What is:

Jun 20 07:35:24 3 DirectoryService[36]: BUG in libdispatch: 10J869 - 1960 - 0x10004004

Could it be it?

Jun 23, 2011 6:56 AM in response to Linc Davis

Yes i booted in safe mood, it didn't hang, but that doesn't mean anything, because it happens on and off in normal boot, so I need to try to boot in safe mood several times and try do several operations and use several applications as I would usually do in order to see if it hangs or not, and only then it would mean something which as of now I can imagine what it would be.

Any other ideas? I am bitting my lips everytime I am forced to use the kill switch to shut down, hoping the problem is not going to snowball.
