My macmail is till all screwed up.
What would happen if I delete ALL the preferences contained within the "preferences" folder?
will this screw up other applications or will they rebuild their prefs as needed?

They will rebuild their prefernce files with the default preferences. Any changes you made in each application would have to be manually re-entered.
They'll just be recreated, but why bother trashing something that has absolutely nothing to do with Mail?
Some of the post I've read on the forums suggested deleting the mail prefs.
Since I don't have any idea which would be the mail prefs, I figured if I deleted all that would pretty much cover it.
What would you suggest?
com.apple.mail.plist.
If you delete the Mail plist, it will delete all references to your accounts. You must set up the accounts just as thet were in order to see your emails again.
