Hello -
I want to update my groups in Address book but the "remove from group" option in my menu is not highlighted. Any ideas on how to make it highlighted and therefore usable?
If it helps, I am using Mac OS X version 10.6.7 and version 5.0.3 for Address book.

I don't want to delete from the entire address book - only from the selected group. Apple help says to select "remove from group" once you have contact highlighted by that option in my drop down menu is not available - the words "remove from group" are ghosted out, not able to click on it...
And, you've selected an entry then navigated to the Edit menu and Remove from Group is ghosted? I just tried this on mine and it's working properly.
That is exactly what I did and that option is ghosted out. Are you using same version etc? I looked in preferences, etc., to see if it needs to be turned "on" and I can't get it to work.
Then offhand I'd think something was wrong like the entry is corrupted or does not exist in the main database.
Is it a group or is it a "smart group". If "smart group" you can't remove an individual and the option is ghosted.
Smart groups are controlled by their selection criteria.

Have you tried it from INSIDE the group? I mean. If you're visualizing the contact in "all contacts", "remove from group" will be not available. Click the group, choose the contact, then you try to remove it.

Yes I did - another person gave me the answer - it is the difference between a group and a smart group.
no - actually it is the difference between a group and a smart group - my data is fine. another person was able to help me.
Would have been quicker had you been more precise in describing the problem such as mentioning it was a smart group. We're hardly mind readers.

I have the same problem. I want to remove a card from a group in Address book but the "remove from group" option in my menu is ghosted. I'm not trying to remove from a smart group, just a regular group.
I tried it from INSIDE the group. If I delete by pressing the delete button, the card is removed from the whole address book.

I believe that you cannot selectively remove a contact from a group (but keep it in your main folder) when using an Exchange account. More specifically, you can't do this within Mac Address Book, but you CAN with Mac Outlook 2011.
Within Outlook, just drag the contact from the group to the Contacts folder. About 5 minutes later, the contact will disappear from the Address Book folder that you created, but still remain within the main 'Address Book/All Exchange' folder.
Just one more reason to use Microsoft Office for the Mac (I use Mac Word and Excel every day, and Outlook and Powerpoint very seldom -- much prefer Mail and Address Book)

Thanks, JP! I thought this would be obvious, but it wasn't very obvious for me when the "Remove from Group" menu option would become visible. Your trick worked well for me!
