The original iPad doesn't support HDMI. Also doesn't support video mirroring. On original iPad, only apps programmed to take advantage of outputted video over the iPad's 30 pin connector will work. If you want to try to use your original iPad with TV you need to purchase either the Apple composite VGA cable kit as the original iPad doesn't output 1080p HD. It will only output standard definition or 720p video.

Sorry, but that is incorrect, at least per the official specs. The iPad 1 does indeed support HDMI output, though only through apps that support video out, not screen mirroring. Something else is probably going wrong for tarmar.

tarmar, have you tried doing a restart of the iPad? (Hold down the power button until you get the red "slide to power off", do so, and then press the power button again to start the iPad back up.)

Regards.

Tarmar, What are you connecting to? Keynote will output over the 30 pin connector using Apple VGA cable kit. Also some video apps, as well as Apple's own video app will output to VGA to TV. Does your HDTV have VGA in? Most HDTV's have additonal video connections other than HDMi. Will standard definition not be acceptable? You do not necessarily need to purchase a newer iPad. Examples of what I have My Web browser of choice outputs over video. Some movie or TV service apps like Netflix or Hulu output over video connector. If you already bought an Apple HDMI connector, recently, swap it for the VGA cable kit. I have on older TV, but video looks plenty acceptable to me.

Dave, I had tried both the HDMI and Apple component video cables before I had to settle on using the VGA cable. My original iPad just didn't work with either. I tried powering down my iPad and restarting, I tried doing a reset. Nothing worked. I remember reading either here on the forums or at Macworld forums that the original iPad doesn't output HD video. The HDMI connector didn't output anything from the video app or my Netflix app. I had some success with the component cable, but the picture was all chopped up and unviewable. The only thing that worked was the composite VGA cable. I wasn't even getting audio from the HDMI connector. Are you sure the HDMI connector works with the original iPad?

Dave, I looked up the official specs for the cable and says it is supposed to work with original iPad. I could not get this cable to work at all after trying for hours before returning it. My iPad couldn't output anything from the Digital video cable. No video or audio. Had it hooked up to a Toshiba HDTV via HDMI. No joy. I wonder if Netflix app outputs to the HDMI because I got signal from both component cable, although it was pretty badly chopped up and get perfect signal from the VGA cable. The Apple video app wasn't working either with the digital video cable. Maybe bad day a far as perhaps I got two bad cables in a row? I don't know. Just know these did not work for me and assumed would not work for any original iPad user.

I've got the same problem. Iam trying to hook up to a LG Flat screen TV in my hotel room. Both HDMI ports work with the hotels cable TV system, but when I try my 1st gen iPAD MINI or my iPhone 5S, I only get audio. I tried my laptop and same thing, until I changed the setting for the LG TV output to 1080i, than the picture came up. So I figure I have to change the output of my iPhone and iPad to 1080i, or change the setting of the LG TV to take 1080p.
