Q: Upgrading RAM

I have new software that requires 1 GB of RAM, my eMac has 512 MB DDR SDRAM.  Can I upgrade it?  Anything I should know before I do so?

Mac OS X (10.4.11)

Visit Crucial.com (as one example) and use their site to see what is available for your model Mac.

Ram is low cost now...buy the most that will fit to gain maximum benefit.

1 GB is possible on all eMacs, but the later models could have up to 2 GBs.

If you have the newer eMac that will handle 2GB RAM, Crucial will not offer this significant perforamnce enhancement with their RAM finder. They only go by Apple's outdated specs and, IMHO, have denied many Mac users the ability to fully upgrade (depending on the model).

To find out which eMac you have, do "About this Mac" from the Apple menu and, in the resulting window, click the "More Info..." button. That involked System Profiler, whose "Hardware Overview" hold the answer.

If "Machine Model" (Hardware Overview's second line) shows "PowerMac4,4" you have the older eMac with a USB 1.1 logic board. It uses PC133 RAM and maxes at one Gig (2 X 512MB modules).

If "Machine Model" shows "PowerMac6,4" you have the newer eMac with a USB 2.0 logic board. It uses PC2700 RAM and maxes at two Gig (2 X 1Gb modules).

I've bought all my Mac RAM (we have 15 Macs in the family) from only two online vendors for over a decagde and newer had a problem with either. They are:

    http://www.datamemorysystems.com/eMac_Memory.asp

    and

    http://eshop.macsales.com/MyOWC/Models.cfm?Family=emac&sType=Memory

If you have the newer logic board, their 1G modules are mac-tested. whereas a similar module from a electronics superstore may be unusable PC RAM. I have one 1Gigger that came from the second vendor  in our 1.42G eMac  and it works perfectly.
