Jun 17, 2011 4:31 PM in response to rudeb0yby Pondini,Sounds like OSX has lost track of where it is. Try a "full reset" of Time Machine, per #A4 in Time Machine - Troubleshooting.
If that doesn't help, try repairing your backups, per #A5 there.

Jun 17, 2011 5:16 PM in response to Pondiniby rudeb0y,Thanks for the reply... I tried all these steps, including setting it up countless times. The configuration that worked yesterday I exported and imported today, and I get error 6584.
I really like ALL my hardware/software (almost too much :-) but this is ridiculous.. I am returning the Time Capsule tomorrow (hopefully a Genius can save my backup else I'm seriously screwed) and I'm going to buy another external disk to use as a backup device, looking at this one: http://bit.ly/kig1Ez

Jul 26, 2011 11:59 AM in response to rudeb0yby musicbass-man,I've exactly the same problem. I have a Mac and a Macbook both with Lion OSX. Neither will run Time Machine. I can however copy files to my Time Capsule so it's not that.
Can't reset Time Machine as the previous person said because time machine won't run in the 1st place.

Yes, you can. That replaces the preference file, which may be damaged. Among other things, it tells Time Machine where to look for your backups.
If that doesn't help, try the things in #E4 of that same article.

Jul 26, 2011 12:20 PM in response to Pondiniby musicbass-man,Ah, didn't realise you could get to the preferences without running Time Machine (new to Macs). However have tried both fixes to no avail. Thanks for your help though.

Jan 15, 2012 11:00 PM in response to rudeb0yby notetoself.net,I had the same -6584 error upon clicking "Enter Time Machine", and I was able to resolve it by option-clicking the Time Machine icon and then selecting "Verify Backups". It took some time over wifi for the 2tb of files, but once it completed, I was again able to enter Star Wars mode.
Cheers

Mar 27, 2012 7:41 PM in response to notetoself.netby Dave03vt,I'm going through this same issue ... can you tell me what you meant by "option-clicking"? I cannot seem to find the "verify backups" action ... thanks

Apr 19, 2012 3:59 AM in response to rudeb0yby steve copeland,I deleted the following file and TimeMachine was then reset to default and would run again.
/Library/Preferences/com.apple.finder.plist
Under Lion in order to find it you need to hold the ALT key and the click on GO on the top toolbar where Library will now appear.

Jun 15, 2012 6:22 PM in response to rudeb0yby CyberRuiz,I was having the same issue... but it seems it was because I was not able to see the back drive I selected. So I simply launched Time Machine from System Preferences, then clicked on "Select Disk"
Once I was able to see my back up drive, the issue went away.
By the way, I am using an Iomega NAS, and LION had issues with SMB connections. However it seemed to be fixed with the latest LION update. I also had to do a firmware upgrade from Iomega. No more issues for me.
Hope this helps
Daniel

Jul 17, 2012 7:59 PM in response to notetoself.netby deumatasha,I was having the same issue and read so many stuff both here on Apple and other forums and was still not able to fix the problem.
However, your simple solution of an Option Click did the job, it was so automatic for me. I just did the option click and it just gave me access to the backup files. Before I all I got was error -6584.
Thank you.
