bluetooth file transfer...

I am trying to decide between an iPad 2 and an Android tablet. I would much rather like to get the iPad, but I would really like to know if it supports bluetooth file transfer. I have several mobile devices and frequently transfer files back and forth between them. This is a requirement for me. I have found that the device does support it if jailbroken, but I don't want to jailbreak. Is there an app that makes use of the device's physical capability? (not simply ipad-ipad communications).

Has there been any word on enabling it with ios 5?

crosses-fingers.

-thanks

No, it does not currently support bluetooth file transfer. It supports bluetooth headsets, A2DP streaming and keyboards.

It hasn't been explicitly addressed in anything that's been released regarding iOS 5, but I'd doubt it. The restriction is, IMO most likely linked to agreements with music publishers to try and prevent wholesale piracy of digital music.

There are numerous apps that will allow you to access cloud storage for files. Dropbox, box.net, etc. Perhaps that will serve your needs.

There are some apps in the App Store you can look into that allow file transfer on Bluetooth, but as the others have said, file transfer via Bluetooth gives rather poor performance. WiFi, either via a cloud-based service such as Dropbox or direct WiFi transfer (if available; I haven't looked for such apps) would be far more satisfactory.

Since Bluetooth file transfer is not an option, is it possible to create an adhoc wifi network for file sharing using an ipad (But then how would you actually access the remote filesystems of said devices)?

I am more concerned with getting PDFs, & PPTs to other devices without wi-fi networks being around. And not having wi-fi is a consistent problem that all the power walking in the world won't solve for me. 🙂

thanks again
