Aggregate Device in Logic

Hi,

I have recently purchased a Lynx Aurora 16 and an Aurora 8.

I am trying to link these together to create the 24 channels I need to use in Logic 9.

I can create an aggregate device simply enough by selecting both the Cards in the Audio/Midi Setup but when the Aggregate device is selected in logic it will only play as though one is connected.

When I select them individually (not as aggregate) they work fine, so they're definitely hooked up correctly.

Can anyone help?

Thanks, Damian

If your Aurora 16 is the first item in your aggregate device, it will occupy the first 32 channels in Logic, 16 channels of analog i/o followed by 16 channels of digital i/o. So your A8(assuming it is the second item in the aggregate device) will start on channel 33 in Logic.

BTW, aggregates and Lynx are not the best friends. Delete your current aggegate and build a fresh one as soon as you're experiencing weirdness.

Good advice from everyone,

John, A is correct... the two units need to be hardware synced first and the aggregate device needs to reflect that setup with the same card serving as hardware master also selected as software master in aggregate device. "resampling" should NOT be selected.

If you're not using W/C sync but instead optical or S/PDIF sync... the "first" card is the master sync device, (probably the Aurora 8) it's digital output going into the digital input of the A16. The A16 set to external sync.

The A16 going directly into the computer.

My setup is this basically,

two PCI cards, one set up as the master. They are connected via internal sync cable. Then Aurora 16 connected to the master card and the 8 connected to the slave card.

As far as I'm aware this is how I do it..

Set the master card as 'sync internal' and then the slave card as 'sync header'. Then set both of the Auroras to AES A.

So the 2nd card and the two auroras are slave to the 1st card....?

Then from there I create my aggregate device and this should work?

I'm assuming. Can some who knows please confirm?

Thanks for all the help, Damian

Yes, that sounds right. You've connected the Aurora's with the right(green) cables to your AES cards? You need at least 3 cables for 3 sets of 8 channels. Beware that you must make sure that the right cards are master and slave. Mac slot order is not necessarily the same as the card numbering. You make an aggregate of the 2 PCI cards, not of the Aurora's themselves.

Thanks,

This all seems right. I just wonder, is there any specific way of telling which card is the master and which is the slave...?, before entering the lynx mixer?

The only reason I ask this is, the place I purchased it from told me my bottom card (in my setup, looking at the back of the mac) is the master and the top is slave and only through trial and error I've come to the conclusion that they must've actually done the opposite...So can I check which one is DEFINITELY the master and slave before I go playing around in the software mixer..?

Also, is there any specific order the lynxs should be connected...? I.e. Aurora 16 to Card 1 and Aurora 8 to card to or vice versa or does it not matter...?

Thanks, Damian
