Use Logic Pro as slave...

I want to use Logic Pro as a slave for Renoise. I'm pretty used to my tracker, bought Logic for the sample pack and instruments. But I just can't get used to the arranger in Logic. Is there a way to send midi note's to Logic per instrument?

It works.... a bit. I select a midi out channel on my instrument strip in Renoise, in this case my Arturia Player keyboard. I don't have to do anything in Logic to hear the instrument selected... but when I select the next instrument in Logic this instrument starts playing and the previous stops.... although I have selected the midi channel it's supposed to react to.

The main goal is to use Logic in the background while Renoise :"plays" the Logic instruments in a live setup.

I could just bounce all the tracks I make in Logic as WAV... but then I loose a lot of the controls like ADSR and so on. And Logic sounds a lot better then Renoise.

Please help.. my brain hurts working with the Logic arranger 😝

I don't quite understand from your question if you want

  • 1) run the Logic Sequencer as a slave. This requires MIDI timing info
  • 2) run Logic Software Instruments as a slave.

Both is possible but option 2 is more often used, having one or many slave machines running as sound sources and feeding back to the Logic Master. That's what I'm using, loading up the second Logic machine with software instruments and "play" them from the first Logic machine.

I'm not familiar with Renoise and when you talk about "Logic arranger", are you referring to the Arrange Window in Logic or the Environment?

Below are a few screenshots that might help you understand the concept.

There is an easier less elegant method than the one Edgar posted.

Under Settings/Recording...

Enable: Auto Demix By Channel

To add to this... each virtual instrument track will need to be on it's own MIDI channel plus your Master keyboard needs to be able to switch output channels to hear each instrument.

Don't have any of your tracks record enabled.

I use Logic as a VI host in this manner, works well.

Note: Logic's Settings are on a per song/project basis.

Logic's Preferences are Global and will not change for each project.

I fixed it in the environment way! First I connected the SUM... so the wrong instruments worked on the wrong midi channel. But when I connected it in the right way it worked, all trough the IAC Apple driver. So no strange midi cables running in and out of my Motu. Selected IAC as a midi out instrument in Renoise and GO!

I also tried the Auto Demix By Channel way.. but didn't work for me.

Thanx for all the help you guys. Now I have the feel of Renoise with the sound and instruments of Logic!
