computer goes black

on two occassions my iMac has just gone black. Into a deep sleep that can't be helped by keystrokes or mouse movements.

I needed to do a hard shut down via start button and then restart. It comes back up fine but I would like to know what might be causing these "black outs" and what I might be able to do about it.
