Help! regards to NTFS 3g

Hi, (Mac newbie here) just recently bought my first Apple computer (MacBook Pro running Mac OS X Version 10.6.7) and this error might have been addressed before, so I apologize.

I installed the NTFS-3G 2010.10.2 but it's giving me the following error and I can't mount my external hd:

NTFS-3G could not mount /dev/disk1s1 at /Volumes/Elements because of the following problem occurred:

/Library/Filesystems/fusefs.fs/Support/fusefs.kext failed to load - (libkern/kext) link error; check the system kernel logs for errors or try kextutil(8). the MacFUSE file system is not available (71)

I don't know how to check kernel logs for error but when I go to System Preferences, I see MacFUSE & NTFS-3G.

I did chkdsk the external hard drive on my windows pc and so far it didn't find any errors. But still getting the above error.

HELP me please. Thank you!

Use the PC to get the data off the NTFS drive.

Uninstall MacFUSE & NTFS-3G using their uninstaller.

Reboot and hook up the now empty external drive.

Go to Disk Utility, select the drive Erase > Security Option Zero and format exFAT. (it's in your Applications/Utlilites folder)

The exFAT drive format can be read by both Mac's and PC's with the latest operating systems and updates. No 4GB file size limit like FAT32. No need to install software on any machines what so ever.

If you have Windows XP, there is a free exFAT download from their site.

MacFUSE hosed my Mac too, I luckily clone my boot drive using the free Carbon Copy Cloner, so it's just a option boot away from recovery.

So I don't know or used their MacFUSE uninstaller.

MacFUSE is a hack by a Google employee, Apple changes things and it likely broke it.

If this helped you, please click the approproate response, thank you. 🙂

Thank you for your reply. Could you please show me how can i choose security option zero and format exFAT ?

In your Applications > Utilities folder (or use Spotlight in the upper right hand corner) search for Disk Utility.

On the left will be your drives, you can't erase the OS X your booted from so that leaves the other one, the external drive. Select it and click Erase > the format to select is exFAT >Security Option > Zero All Data from the drop down window that appears.

User uploaded file

The Zero Erase takes about a hour per 500GB and ensures anything left behind is completely wiped off, including malware.

It also maps off any bad sectors you have left on the drive before you lay data on them, ensures better writes and reads.

Once this is completed you can quit. The drive should appear on the desktop where you can drag and drop files between computers no problem.

Your Mac's operating system needs to be up to date on 10.6.5 or later. Use the Apple Menu > Software Update to make sure your opearating system is current.

The ability to read and write exFAT format was added in 10.6.5 and later so it's rather recent change, and likely why you were directed to use the NTFS-3G/MacFUSSE to begin with. Now it's no longer needed.
