No AirDrop on MacBook Air 2008

On my MacBook Air is no AirDrop available in the Finder. I heard that some Wifi Firmware Versions aren't compatible with AirDrop, I have: Broadcom BCM43xx 1.0 (5.10.131.36.11) Any idea, why this doesn't work?

I'm in the same boat. I cannot comment on why older Macs are not supported, but this is mentioned on the Lion Tech Specs page: http://www.apple.com/macosx/specs.html

AirDrop

supports the following Mac models:

  • MacBook Pro (Late 2008 or newer)
  • MacBook Air (Late 2010 or newer)
  • MacBook (Late 2008 or newer)
  • iMac (Early 2009 or newer)
  • Mac mini (Mid 2010 or newer)
  • Mac Pro (Early 2009 with AirPort Extreme card, or Mid 2010)

Lion seems to be a lame goose as far as my Mac pro 1.1 march 2007... I hope steve Jobs and apple stop hurting their longtime followers by forcing them to upgrade their machines all the time. I haven't got a spare £2,000 in my back pocket like them... my specs are below.. and they never said anything about this in the lion preview podcast..

I found this forum because I was wondering why my iMac (purchased January 2009) doesn't support AirDrop.

It works perfectly fine on my MacBook Pro (purchased March 2010). Since I'm at work and can only supply my MacBook Pro stats here they are:

I didn't realize that you had to have a certain chip in order for AirDrop to work. I assumed that it would work because my iMac is only 2 years old. I'll have to wait to get home and compare my MacBook Pro settings to my iMac. AirDrop sounds great; it's a shame I won't be able to use it. I'm forced to stick with DropBox to continue sharing between my Macs - which works for me.

Airdrop only works on recent generation macs. Here is the list

MacBook Pro (Late 2008 or newer)*

MacBook Air (Late 2010 or newer)

MacBook (Late 2008 or newer)*

iMac (Early 2009 or newer)

Mac Mini (Mid 2010 or newer)

Mac Pro (Early 2009 with AirPort Extreme card, or Mid 2010)

* The MacBook Pro (17-Inch Late 2008) and the white MacBook (Late 2008) do not support AirDrop.

For older Mac (intel)

In your terminal enter "defaults write com.apple.NetworkBrowser BrowseAllInterfaces 1"

Once run run "killall Finder".... you may need to run on both old and new Macs if connecting to a non Airdrop compatible Mac. But won't work if both Apple ID are the same. !!! So it doesn't solve a lot if your looking to transfer files between say and iMac and MacBook Air both of which you own and share the same account.
