Use the free OnyX and run all the cleaning and maintenance aspects, it will clean out the log files.
I did run Onyx but that didnt change the fact that there are still 6.1 gb of logs and 4.5 of vm.
I know what logs are but i dont know what vm are.
The Question remains : which one is safe to delete?
The virtual memory files are deleted automatically whenever you reboot. Don't delete them manually, as that would crash your system.
As for the logs, which ones in particular are large, and what's in them?
I wish there is a way of uploading a snapshot of the logs the largest are:
kernel.log.2 ( 2gb)
asl (1.5 gb)
kernel.log.1 ( 1 gb)
system.log ( 1 gb)
kernel.log.5 ( 05.gb)
Launch the Console application and select each of the big logs from the list. You'll probably see many repetitions of a few messages. Post one example of each such repetition.
You can hold Command Shift 4 and drag the crosshairs around what you want us to see (long as its not too large) and then click, on your desktop will be the file which you use the camera thingy in the post here to upload. 🙂
Or you can "select all" from the Edit Menu and Copy the text and then Paste in your post here as well.
OnyX not cleaning your log files? That is strange, it's the safest approach. What your doing via Omni is a bit dangerous why I recommended OnyX instead.
Perhaps you forgot to check something, reboot or run Omni again?
I'm assuming here your computer is slow, why your trying to delete files? Or?
my Mac is not slow but i am running out of space. I usually run omnidisksweep to find out why.
here is a snapshot of the log files and vm files
I got the png snapshots on my desktop.
when i drag them to this pan, the green + shows but nothing happens !!
Please don't post screenshots. Post extracts from the log text.
I did
posted 3 posts above
No, you didn't. You posted the names of the log files. I'm asking for the contents.
ok, its a long list with no way to copy/paste from consol. however, i was able to tell that some can be deleted and some are immune to deletion.
I deleted those logs related to applications which i no longer have.
I guess that is it
]thank you all
Linc is asking for "SAMPLES" of what is in the log files. With logs that large, there are going to be a lot of repeats. Post some examples (samples) of the frequently repeating messages.
And DO NOT touch the /var/vm files, unless you prefer not using your Mac :-)
