You need a third party plugin for that but according to your profile you are running Mac OS X (10.4.2) ????
Glims can do the job if you are running v10.5 or above.
Install Glims.
You could also try Firefox. It has a full screen mode.
The Lion OS appears to be the real answer, when released later this month.
As longtime Windows PowerUser, converting to the Mac, Fullscreen was never consistent across all applications on the Windows platform. One of my initial reasons for using Opera as alternative browser was the mouse accessibility of full screen from the screen context menu. Something IE only made available via keyboard shortcut.
Lion appears to make full sreen an inate feature of the OS available to all applications... not just browsers.
In the meanwhile, you can make Safari fill your entire screen by first moving the upper-left corner of the Safari window to the upper-left corner of your monitor's viewable area, and then dragging the lower-right corner of the Safari window to the lower-right corner of your monitor's viewable area.
