Printing with ipad 2 without computer

I want to rpint directly from my ipad 2 to my usb printer (hp laserjet 1018) with an airport express but without a computer. Can someone tell me if this is possible? I don't want to trow away my old printer ( which works well) and I dont want to activate my computer all the time.

I have the HP C7280 printer (which has built in WiFi). This is a non-airprint printer.

It works great with the Print N Share app for printing from the iPad or iPhone.

To be clear, if I were buying a new printer, I would get an AirPrint printer. Since I have this printer, and I paid a lot for it, I am happy for this solution.

I don't know if this would work with an Airport Express but no Mac. If I recall correctly, you need to configure the Airport Express with a Mac so that the USB printer is recognized.

You can print from any app which supports printing, including email. You have to have the Print N Share App running in the background of your iPad. Then your email app will "see" that there is a printer option. The email app sends it to Print N Share. You open Print N Share app and you will see your queue of print jobs and you can send them to a real printer.

Mjfvangelder-

As you are aware, your HP Laserjet 1018 printer does not support AirPrint. Connected to the USB port of a correctly configured AirPort Express, you might be able to print to it using an iPad App like Print n Share. However, that printer may be one that requires the computer to provide much of the calculations involved in printing. As such, it may not be possible to use it without a computer. You can download the free iPad App, HP iPrint Photo, to test if the printer can be used with the AirPort Express.

As far as printing to an AirPrint printer without a WiFi router, YES. You should be able to set up the printer's WiFi as an Ad Hoc network, if it is not one of the model(s) without WiFi.

I can't guarantee all WiFi AirPrint printers can be set up with an Ad Hoc network, but I know some can. To be sure, you would need to contact HP about a specific model.

Mine is probably the cheapest AirPrint model, the HP D110. (Outside the US, the equivalent model is B110.) It was set for an Ad Hoc network when I first plugged it in. In the initial setup, I associated it with my regular network, and downloaded a firmware update in the process. You will most likely need an update regardless of which model you get, so will need access to the internet for initial setup.

As I recall, I was able to set up the D110 for Ad Hoc networking by specifying a non-existent network name. When the printer couldn't find it, it asked if I wanted to establish an Ad Hoc network. There was a nonsense error message along the way. I ignored it and the setup was successful. There is probably a more direct way to do it if you search the menus.
