AppleTV update URL broken?

I have a brand new appleTV running 4.1.1 that I should be able to update to 4.2.2. I tried updating the SW on my new appleTV tonight from the AppleTV interface, but it said the update was unavailable at this time. I then tried a restore/upgrade while tethered to a mac via USB, but again after the first few screens, the update failed to download.

In order to troubleshoot, I not only tried both automatic and tethered download, I also tried two different macs for tethering and two different ISPs. Finally, I resorted to tcpdump to see what is going on. It appears the software download is attempted from "http://appldnld.apple.com/AppleTV/041-0596.20110511.Zz7mC/AppleTV2,1_4.3_8F305_R estore.ipsw". On browsing to this URL, I get a "file not found" webpage. Looking at the tcdump outputs, the initial responce is a http 302 moved.

The hostname appldnld.apple.com resolves to an Akamai endpoint from where the content is served. I have manipulated DNS resolution to try a number of Akamai caches around the world for this content but get either 302s or 404s. Sample Output from tcpdump below (my IP redacted). I found a work around. You can download the the correct image (need to find the link on the net, the one I tried said incompatible hardware).

It's seems the image file coming off the apple servers is borked. Can't find a good image.

With the usb only connected to the apple tv go to restore in ITunes, but hold down shift and hit restore. This will let you pick the restore image. choose the image you downloaded above and it should update your firmware to the 4.2.2. image.

I thought I was going nuts just like the rest of you. Glad I found this topic feed.

I tried all night! I couldn't get and ipsw files to take. I downloaded about 5 different files that in theory should have taken. It's almost as if the files aren;t getting signed prop. from apple. All my tricks are exausted. I even tried tricking the host file into not going to apple to verify if the file was correct.

Looks like the link is working now. Just restored successfully using itunes with normal download.

I arrived home from vacation on Sunday 6/19. Although I'm not sure why, my ATV2 showed the "connect to itunes" screen when I turned it on, so my only option is to perform a restore. I called Apple and they confirmed that the servers are still down (are they really down or is there just a bad software image out there?) and that "they hope to have it up by the end of the week."

Unlike those of you who can still use your Apple TV without updating, I cannot - this is incredibly frustrating and like others have said, I would be fired in my line of work for leaving customers hanging like this!

Come on Apple - at least give us some information so we can know when everything is back up and running!

I bought this morning the ATV2 in replacement of the ATV 1...I met the same issues than the others (i live in Paris) : Impossible to get the good Ipsw from Apple's servers !

This is really a shame and insult to let customers speculate, alone, about eventual issues ! What are doing Apple's communication and technical' departments ?

Man, whatta joke... Bought the device less than a week ago and it's such a struggle! Coupled with the letdown that is Final Cut Pro X, I'm really beginning to lose faith in Apple, which really IS a crying shame...

They are unable to fix a basic ATV update because their servers are down (that's the most reasonnable speculation until their departement's wake up to talk to us) and they want us to trust them for ICloud ?!!!

Do you imagine your self loosing important work files and having, as unique solution, the opportunity to scream your frustration in these place deserted by Apple's communication employees...

Not working in Kentucky either. Bought this ATV2 yesterday afternoon with the same result in regards to the software update. The Apple ATV2 server must really be pooked. Hopefully they will get it going soon. In the meantime, it is nice to know that it just isn't me! The rest is working great! Neat product.

nice comment about iCloud - yea, there were so many bugs with .mac and .me, and now something like this. I have been trying to update for the week now that I have had it and now luck - always fails (whether microUSB or ethernet method).

Hi,

I just wanted to add that I am having the same problem here in Ontario Canada. I called apple and they told me that it was their server having problems. They claimed that it would be a couple of days before it would be fixed. But she could not give me a firm date. Kinda stinks because I got a referb 2nd Gen yesterday but it's OS is really old. Can't airplay any apps! Sigh.
