AppleTV update URL broken?

I have a brand new appleTV running 4.1.1 that I should be able to update to 4.2.2. I tried updating the SW on my new appleTV tonight from the AppleTV interface, but it said the update was unavailable at this time. I then tried a restore/upgrade while tethered to a mac via USB, but again after the first few screens, the update failed to download.

In order to troubleshoot, I not only tried both automatic and tethered download, I also tried two different macs for tethering and two different ISPs. Finally, I resorted to tcpdump to see what is going on. It appears the software download is attempted from "http://appldnld.apple.com/AppleTV/041-0596.20110511.Zz7mC/AppleTV2,1_4.3_8F305_R estore.ipsw". On browsing to this URL, I get a "file not found" webpage. Looking at the tcdump outputs, the initial responce is a http 302 moved.

The hostname appldnld.apple.com resolves to an Akamai endpoint from where the content is served. I have manipulated DNS resolution to try a number of Akamai caches around the world for this content but get either 302s or 404s. Sample Output from tcpdump below (my IP redacted). Can anyone comment on this issue?

thanks, Paul

True... but it looks amateurish... Something you'd expect to be broken on a cheap no-name media streaming box that's been cobbled together with a shoddily assembled collection of FOSS media software sitting atop a thinly disguised, aging linux build with a bizarre interface including amusing typos... Not a massively popular, slick machine like the atv2 with the legendary Apple user experience stamped into it!

Anyway, I realise I am just moaning now, so I'll stop 🙂 Thanks for the comments and for confirming my suspicions of the wider impact...

After reading countless forum posts that the Apple TV 2 update process has been failing the last few days but working for others, I was getting frustrated. I wanted to update my device for the new Airplay features and I was desperate to try anything.

I am in OHIO and nothing appear to be working. So I used my Witopia VPN client and connected to another part of the country until I found a spot the servers worked.

If you have the ability, you may want to VPN somewhere and see if you can get things moving again. It worked for me.

I just spoke with apple care. They are aware there is an issue. They told me the apple tv update server is down. From what they said it has been down all week and they are working to resolve the issue. They told me there is no ETA on when it will be fixed to just keep trying to update every day or so. Mine works fine it's just a pain to have the update screen pop up. 😠

For me is this a problem, my new ATV2 I've bought this week have only FW 4.1.1 and I'd like to have the function I need it with the new FW...so I'll wait for the possibility to update....

Apple still have a Problem since 19.06.2011. You can't make a FW update for an ATV2 at the moment.

Pls read this post!

Thanks for posting about this issue. I bought a new ATV2 yesterday and have tried to update from 4.1.1 to 4.2.2 both ways from three internet connections and from two different machines. All fail. The updates from the tv just say 'the update was not successful' and from iTunes give the 'file corrupted' error others have mentioned. I have another ATV2 with 4.2.2 and it *is* better and the upgrade *did* work. Incidentally I am in Brisbane, Australia.

Jun 26, 2011 1:06 AM in response to Mario Ferreira Filho

I'm in the same boat in Silicon Valley (home of Apple, BTW). I have been trying for a week to update my 4.1.1 APTV2 via wired Ethernet and get the same issue: "Update Unsuccessful". I wonder if Apple found a bug in the latest (4.2.2) firmware and pulled it from the update servers and, as is usual for Apple, won't actually come out and say "we found a bug, hold on, we'll get 4.2.2 fixed and available for update soon" but rather leaves everyone in this limbo. For the person that said "I wouldn't get too frustrated about it, it's an update, your Apple TV will still function without it" you should read this Apple support article:

http://support.apple.com/kb/HT4448

since there are at least a few significant fixes from 4.1.1; in my case, I'd sure like an ATV2 that doesn't go catatonic after it goes to sleep. It's getting tiring unplugging the power cord and plugging it in again, especially for the ATV2 that is buried in my media closet.

Anyway, whatever the issue, having the update unavailable for a week now and without *any* official word from Apple is getting really frustrating, especially when the update fixes basic features of the product (such as reliably coming out of sleep and reliably dealing with WiFi interruptions without locking up) that should never have been broken in the first place.
