Crashing during Time Capsule Backup

We have two Macbook Pros and we connect to the Internet using a Time Capsule. Lately, while the time capsule backs up, our computers either freeze, run very slowly, or drop the Internet connection all together and Firefox crashes. In the past, when the Time Capsule was backing up there was no noticable interference with operation.

Does this happen when either Mac is backing-up, or just one? If you're not sure, turn Time Machine OFF on one, and do a backup manually (select the TM icon in the Menubar, or right-click the one in the Dock, and select Back Up Now). If no problem, reverse the procedure.

Does it happen when connected via Ethernet, or just WIFI?

See the green box in #D2 in Time Machine - Troubleshooting for some possible fixes.

Both Macs freeze up (or run so slowly that they seem frozen) during the backup. Only my computer crashes on Firefox (my wife is using Safari). The freeze/slowdown will occur during backup no matter what program is running. My wife was in the middle of typing a Word document and even though she was typing, the characters weren't appearing on the page. All of a sudden the computer would "catch-up" and put the last two sentances on the page all at once. Then it would freeze again. No problem with either computer during "non-backup" periods.

It's like the Timecapsule is taking over all functionality on the computer whhen it backs up. We only use the Wi-Fi connection and haven't tried backing up on ethernet. Due to the location of the Timecapsule, it isn't feasable to connect via ethernet.

If you want to fix this, you're going to have to narrow it down to find the problem. I'm happy to provide some advice, but you've got to do the work.

You say both Macs have problems during "the backup" -- is that when one Mac is backing-up, or both? If you're not sure, try the procedure in the first paragraph of my earlier post.

If only one Mac's backups are the problem, connect that one via Ethernet and run a backup. If you have to move it temporarily, do so. If the problem disappears, it's a WIFI problem. If not, it's something on that Mac.
