ASC log in timing out

Can I adjust how long I am logged in to the apple support community? Recently, I have been in the midst of a reply and when I hit send, I lost it and the message says I need to log in to submit a comment. Since I WAS logged in, and I am not losing internet connection as my other items stay open, I am guessing it is a ASC time out issue. Can anyone tell me if we can set how long before we get logged out?

Thank you,

michelle

As I said earlier, the system does not reliably save drafts. It is not a rumor. I have actually had it save drafts for me on three or four occasions, but it is not dependable, and more often than not does not save a draft.

If you're in the middle of a post and are called away for some reason, I'd suggest when you come back, highlight and copy and paste your post into a TextEdit document or Stickies note so that it won't be lost in case you have to log in again before continuing.

Good Idea Rhonda, thanks for this tip. I did a test draft this am, knowing I'd be gone for an hour. I came back and, as I expected, had to log in again. I went to the tab I had been working in and did not see/find an update icon anywhere. I clicked on reply to the same message I had started a reply for before I left and there was no option for a draft, or an update icon there either. So I was forced to start over. Since the message is there when we first walk back to the computer, your idea of copy and save to be able to paste in after logging back in would at least save the work we'd done, which when trying to describe a problem or issue can be detailed and tiring to redo.

Thanks again!

Michelle

I've never had a lost response saved. It's very upsetting, I agree.

Another thing you can do is this:

Select all the copy you've written. Then move your cursor over the text until it turns from an arrow to the I-beam thingie. When it turn into the I-beam, move your cursor over to the desktop, and the copy will go there, as well.

So when you get back, you can drag the file back into a response box.

You do not click on reply. The procedure is a little convoluted. You have to have multiple windows into the forum to get it to work.

After the system times you, I got this to work.

  1. The forum software logs you out because of lack of activity.
    User uploaded file
  2. command + t to get a new tab window.
    tabbed windowUser uploaded file
  3. You need to sign in again in the new tab window. Here is a llnk you may use
    https://discussions.apple.com/index.jspa
  4. click on sign in
fill in your sign in informationUser uploaded file
  5. wait until sign in completes
  6. go back to your previous tab, the one with your suspended reply. Click on the tab header. After clicking you get:User uploaded file
  7. click on Add Reply button

A much simpler way to do the same thing is to right click on the Apple Support Communities link, either at the top of the page or the "breadcrumb" at the bottom (shown below), and choose "Open in New Tab" (or in a new window) from the popup menu. This also links to https://discussions.apple.com/index.jspa, so you can sign in & then return to the tab with the pending reply & try posting it again.

EDIT: even simpler than right-clicking & bothering with the popup menu choices, in Safari & many other browsers as well, just command-click on the Apple Support Communities link to open the sign in page in a new tab or window, depending on your browser preferences.

I have never seen draft. I'd classify "draft" as a rumor.

Robert ~ Safari crashed in the middle of composing a reply. After re-starting Safari and replying to the same post, I clicked on "Use advanced editor" and was presented with this:

User uploaded file

...I clicked on Use Recovered and it recovered my draft, including images & text links, perfectly.
