What app is it? -> could be an issue with the app itself. Try double tapping the home button, where you'll see your recently used applications along the bottom, hold your finger to the app's icon then hit the minus and then try relaunching. If unsuccessful, try deleting it by holding your finger to the regular icon and hitting the x then try re downloading it.

Does it happen with all of your apps or if issue persists? -> Try turning off iPad by pressing and holding the button at the top right corner (sleep/wake button) and holding it, then slide to power off and try turning it back on. If still happening, try a hard reset by pressing and holding the sleep/wake button and the home button (little indented circle with a square inside near the bottom on the face of the iPad) until you see the apple then let go and wait a few minutes to turn it back on.

If those don't work and it's just the one app, contact the developer of the app. If it happens with all your apps, you might have to restore. Let me know how it works out!

I do know that a lot of developers have not updated their applications to be fully compatible with iOS 5 and this causes crashes within the applications. Unfortunately I am also experiencing this with a large number of my applications. At this point, the only solution is to keep checking for updates by going into the App Store > Updates and be patient. If this occurs with applications that are built in (you can check by holding your finger to them, they won't have an x because you can't delete them), then there might be an issue with the software itself. I can provide instructions for restoring your software (and having to backup, delete, and restore all of your information in the process) if this is the case.

Again, it is up to the developers to ensure that their apps function normally and crashes most often happen after major iOS updates.

The messenger icon should never be deleted off one of the home screens. When you double click and tap the minus that only stops it from running in the background but the icon should still be there. Check all of your pages in case it was accidentally moved. If it is still not there try resetting your home screen layout by going to settings > general > reset > reset home screen layout. Note that this will undo any folders you've made but it will keep the applications. The messages icon should now be on the home screen.

Let me know if that works.
