Q: Final Cut Server has been discontinued

I don't know that this really means, but apparently the product that I've loved for the past 3.5 years has been discontinued.

Important Information about Final Cut Studio, Final Cut Express, and Final Cut Server

Effective June 21, 2011, Final Cut Studio, Final Cut Express, and Final Cut Server have reached end of life. Resellers may return any unsold inventory to Apple. If resellers opt to return unsold inventory, it will not count against the reseller return cap. See standard policies and procedures regarding returns for more information.

We'll Apple is done with the pro market.  Xsan will be killed next.  The exodus is here.  Already called Avid sales to schedule an appointment to convert our shop over.  We're done.  See ya' Steve!  Good luck editing the the next Pixar film on Adobe.

Avoid Avid, or at least Pinnacle, like the plague! I had so many problems that I decided to buy my Mac Book Pro and switch from Windows. Almost bought Final Cut Express but decided to edit a wedding video in IMovie and honestly, that worked great -- absolutely better than Pinncacle. I tried to do simple things like using audio to transition over video clips, makings simple transitions, etc and could not get it to work in between the times it hung up. Of course, closing it and rebooting meant losing all the work done in that session. I got so good at re-editing the wedding procession and vows that I could recreeate the first 7 minutes in about a half hour. Who wants to get that good at recreating a single clip? Got almost zero support from Avid.

JimCheesdhead - I don't think Mathew47 was changing his shop over to Pinnacle.

Anyone know what applications stock agencies like Getty / iStock, Pond5, et al use?

I was on AVID (13 years) and Unity/Interplay (3 years) and my company just switched to FCP and FCSvr in the last few months.  I will vouch for AVID and Unity/Interplay.  I found them in conjunction to be very robust.  We have a large library of video and it was very easy to search, organize etc., once you get the hang of it that is. Once we moved to FCSvr, I found some things missing that I really liked in Interplay, the same can be said for AVID as well. There are many features of AVID that FCP either just does not have or there are multiple steps to get it to do the same thing that was one step in AVID.

A little late, but I just found out about this news today and I'm speechless.  I've worked so hard over the last 2 years to learn, administer, and customize FCSvr, and now this.  Wow, Apple really is spelling it out very clearly here that they don't care about us pros.  I know they think they are moving in the right direction, but really if you listen to everyone in the industry it's clear that Apple only cares about iGear at this point.    Even if Apple has some grand master plan, it won't be ready in time for me to consider.  By then I'll have moved on for sure.   So sad really.    It's time for me to consider Avid or Adobe, and I'll most likely be taking training classes to get up to speed so that I will be ready in a year from now.
