External Hard Drive

Has anyone else been unable to access projects/create events on an external hard drive? I've been trying to do this all morning but FCP X seems unwilling to have the drives show up. For all the features that have been stripped away, one would think this would be easier. What am I missing?

Okay, I've tried copying the folder structure into both external drives, they aren't recognized. I've tried importing directly from the externals, it simply creates alias files. I know it's possible to keep projects on an external drive, and what I suspect is that you have to have a very specific folder setup in order to do so. Either way, FCPX is not creating this folder structure for me and the only drive I can refer to is my home user folder drive. Steve Martin even has pictures of his using an external drive here: http://www.kenstone.net/fcp_homepage/fcp_x_first_look_martin.html

What did he do right?

I have 2 folders in the root directory of my RAID drive: One is Final Cut Events; the other is Final Cut Projects

These were created by FCP. I imported a MOV file that was stored on my RAID into FCP. I then selected show event properties. At that point the Raid drive showed up within FCP. I then did a "New Event" which created the event folder on the raid drive from what I can determine

Try this - set up the Final Cut Event and Final Cut Project folders in your root directory of the external drive. Copy (not drag) an event or project that you've created under FCP X (which will be on your Mac hard drive) to the external drive folder. Then go into FCP and open the event or project (you can search for the drive). At that point the external drive should be visible. More importantly when you create a new event or project, it will be created on the external drive (at least that's what happened to me)

Found this in the instructions; create a new project (it will default to your mac hard drive). Select the project (use
Command O to show Project library). When the project is selected, use "File Move" it will show all your connected drives (I even have a USB flash drive that shows as an option). Move the project and all your referenced files, it will move everything to the other drive

I followed all of these steps and in the Move Project dialoge box, it says No Value in the Location area... I also tried making the Final Cut Event Folder and Final Cut Project Folder on my external drive and launching a project from there but it only opened the project from my computers hard drive. Sheesh Apple, saving projects and files to an external drive should be simple!

Well, the RAID 5 works just fine. So does the Western Digital... IF I use it from home. I'm not exactly sure what the protocols are for recognizing a hard drive in FCPX, but this is what I know: on a MacBook Pro using FireWire800 out, a Western Digital RAID array will not be recognized, no matter what steps you take. This also applied to my USB 2 transport drive. However, use the same equipment on a Mac Pro tower and they show up in the Events just like your home folder. I do not know why this is. What I do know is that this will make remote editing extremely difficult.
